The name "Alfama" derives from the Arabic word Al-Hama which means "source of warm water, good water". The tightly-packed lanes, small archways, and stone-paved terraces are full of atmosphere and great fun to explore. Alfama was one of the few areas of Lisbon which wasn't destroyed by the big 1775 earthquake. Lisbon's old quarter offers many things to see. Besides the castle, there are several historic 17th-century churches in the vicinity, as well as the city's impressive cathedral.  Alfama also wakes up at night, when some of the city's most authentic cafés and restaurants open their doors to serve delicious traditional cuisine with plenty of bonhomie. Lisbon: Discoveries Sitway Tour

8. Lisbon: Discoveries Sitway Tour

A perfect area to enjoy the river and the best the city has to offer combining it with history. Belém is known as the historic district of the Age of Discovery. It was from its waterfront that Vasco da Gama and other explorers departed for their voyages, events celebrated today by grand monuments and museums in the neighborhood. The sensational architecture of the Tower of Belem and Jerónimos Monastery (both World Heritage sites) was the result of the discovery of the sea route to India, the opening of trade with Japan and the colonization of Brazil and parts of Africa and Asia.  These monuments are adorned and embellished with motifs of exotic lands elaborately carved in stone, as are the heroes of the age on the colossal Discoveries Monument. This is also Lisbon's museum district, with the one of a kind Coaches Museum filled with royal fairytale vehicles and the Berardo Museum showcasing a world-class collection of international contemporary and modern art. Despite all these attractions, it's a pastry shop that receives the most visitors. At Antiga Confeitaria de Belém (simply known as Pastéis de Belém or Belém pastries) you may devour one or several of Lisbon's famous custard tarts that originated at this site and that are still unlike any others found around the country, made here from a secret recipe. This is not your conventional Segway tour.  This is the only sitway tour in town (Sit-Segway), and you can choose whatever suits you better, rent a sitway to roll through town at your own pace or ask for one of the guided tours to visit the most wanted ex libris in town such as the Old Town (Alfama, the St Jorge Castle), Belem or Parque das Nações. You can also start at one station and deliver into another. You can basically do whatever you want, its your vacations. Sitway is suitable for everyone, from children to adults. In 1 minute, you will be an expert. Come alone, with your family or group of friends, the local tour operator can roll up to 50 people at the same time. On this unique experience, you will be able to observe Lisbon monuments, see the amazing city lights, the Tagus River and its sunsets, viewpoints, parks, food and people as you roll seated and comfortable.

this was the absolute best way to see lisbon on our first day. we got a full tour of key sights to better understand where we wanted to get back to. our guide was personable and fun. given lisbon’s many hills, a segway is the absolute best way to get around with ease. would absolutely recommend! we loved it so much we’re doing the same segway tour in porto!

This was the perfect way to see different areas of Lisbon and learn its history. Our family (including two teens) all loved it. David, the owner, is a great guide.

David was very accommodating to beginners and knowledgable. Would 100% recommend to anyone wanting to see Lisbon in a fun and entertaining way.

We had great time on the Segway, the tour guides were really good and the tour we did quite adventurous.

Out guide was excellent. Thoughtful, kind and fun to be around.
