Start in the Cais do Sodré area and cross the majestic Praça do Comercio, where you will visit the Old Town district of Alfama. Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter. Spread over the south-eastern slope of one of the hills of Lisbon, the picturesque neighbourhood is composed of a maze of narrow streets, winding alleyways, and steep flights of steps.  One of the few areas of Lisbon, which wasn't destroyed by the massive 1775 earthquake, Lisbon's old quarter offers many things to see. Explore tightly-packed lanes, small archways, and stone-paved terraces which are full of character and great fun to explore. See several historic 17th-century churches in the vicinity, the city's impressive cathedral, and São Jorge Castle.
