Following a pick-up at your hotel in Lisbon or Cascais (optional), drive to the Fatima Sanctuary where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before 3 peasant children. Your guide will explain the history behind the story of Our Lady of Fatima, and the appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1917. Enjoy some free time to discover the sanctuary and its sights, such as the sheer white basilica built in 1953. See supplicants in the chapel that is the main focus of the Catholic devotion, and marvel at the marble path worn smooth by pilgrims. There will be time to attend mass for those who choose to. After lunch, return to the Portuguese capital and discover the highlights of Lisbon. Go to the historic neighborhood of Belem to see the monuments to Portugal’s “Age of Discoveries” such as the Torre Belem (Belem Tower), the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) on the edge of the Tagus River, and the elaborate Jerónimos Monastery at Santa Maria de Belém. Continue to Lisbon city center to see some of its stunning Pombaline squares, such as the Praça de D. Pedro IV (Rossio Square) and Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square). Explore the narrow streets of the Alfama district, and see the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Mary Major, better known as Lisbon Cathedral.
