Full description
Learn about the origins of fado music on a 3-hour walking tour of the Lisbon neighborhoods where it originated. As you explore, you will be accompanied by a live fado singer and guide. Experience the magic of Portuguese fado, a form of music listed by UNESCO as of “World Intangible Cultural Heritage.” An important part of everyday life in Lisbon, there is no better way to learn about Portuguese culture than through a close encounter with fado in the nation’s capital. You will go to some typical fado houses, where fadistas have earned their living for decades. Wander the alleys and squares around Praca Martim Moniz, a multicultural part of Lisbon that is off the usual tourist route. Discover local taverns instrumental in the history of fado culture in the Mouraria district. Then, stop for a delicious meal of caldo verde (a traditional Portuguese soup) and barbecued chouriço (spicy sausage), served with bread and wine in one of the authentic fado houses of Alfama.

That evening we were out with our companion Monika, who was able to tell us a great deal about fado. Me too as an absolute fado fan. "Our" Fadista, who performed different Fado in many places in Mouraria and Alfama, was absolutely amazing and touched me immensely. At the end we were with Monika in a fado restaurant in the Alfama where we could again enjoy very good fado from Fadistas in a really comfortable and authentic environment. The evening was one of the best parts of our visit to Lisbon. Thank you Monika for this great experience

Our tour was great. Not only did our guide, Hugo, possess an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the Fado genre and its famous singers, but Hugo arranged for an actual Fado singer, Ruca, to accompany us and sing numerous Fado selections as we toured Alfama on our way to a Fado restaurant where we heard four more excellent Fado singers perform. When Ruca sang as we wound our way through the maze of Alfama streets and alleys, local residents came to their windows and doorways and joined us in enthusiastically applauding his singing. We highly recommend Hugo’s Fado tour.

This was a sure highlight of our trip, which included memorable activities and events in Morocco and Portugal. It was really cool to learn all about Fado and walk the streets where it all began. Having Rhuka (sp?), a real Fado singer, perform at various stops along the way was beautiful and very moving. Our guide was wonderful, informative, passionate and really engaging. We learned so much, enjoyed seeing the nooks and crannies of parts of Lisbon, really enjoyed the singing and history and the dinner and longer performance at the end was a great cap. This is a really intimate and engaging experience that my son and I highly recommend.
