Full description

Follow in the footsteps of Catholic pilgrims on a full-day sightseeing tour of Central Portugal from Lisbon. Transfer from the Portuguese capital, and drive through a vast variety of landscapes. Your first stop will be the extraordinary town of Fátima, where an apparition of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before 3 children every month between May 1917 and October 1917. Now one of the major shrines of the Catholic faith, the complex contains the tombs of 2 of the young shepherd children, the crown of the Virgin in the Chapel of the Apparitions, and a section of the Berlin Wall (said to be a tribute to God’s part in the fall of communism) . Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant (own expense) far from the tourist crowds, and get a taste for authentic Portuguese food. Continue to the fishing port of Nazaré for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Popular with surfers, Nazaré was the site of a 79-foot wave, surfed by Garrett McNamara in 2011. Finally, tour the picturesque town of Óbidos, taken from the Muslims in 1148. Forming part of the dowry of numerous Portuguese queens, Óbidos maintains its medieval feel inside the old city walls, with cobblestone streets and flower-bedecked houses.

Wonderful day! Truly one of the highlights of our stay in Portugal. This felt like a private tour because the bus takes only 8 and 6 of the 8 is my family. So we felt it was very personal and comfortable. The sights are amazing and our guide Tanya was so passionate about her country and history and really put her heart and soul in explaining everything. By far Obidos the medieval city is the most stunning historical sights and towns ever. Make sure to walk the wall of the fortress and try their speciality the ginghinna (I’m sure I spelled it wrong!) in nazare go to the top of the stairs and eat sea food rice and stew at Sitio. It’s the best I ever had! All in all a wonderful day.

We really enjoyed our tour of Fátima, Nazaré, and Óbidos. Manuel was very confident, enthusiastic and carried himself well in explaining all the historical landmarks and even the smaller details like symbols. He gave us plenty of time to visit the three areas and we were lucky to go at an off-peak day so we did not encounter much queues. He took great care of our little group and was well equipped with things like umbrellas and a step stool. I recommend this tour!

Carolina our guide was excellent, her English was impeccable, her knowledge of the history of not only Portugal but the world (made my dad say she could be a lecturer with her English and knowledge). My dad is not easily impressed but Carolina impressed him. Carolina was a good driver and tour guide. She went all out to ensure we were all comfortable. She was very caring towards us and kept check we were all right and tailor everything to everyone’s need. The places we visited was worth it. Everyone needs to do this tour if nothing else while in Lisbon.
