From Lecce: Otranto, S.M. Leuca, Gallipoli & Galatina Tour

1. From Lecce: Otranto, S.M. Leuca, Gallipoli & Galatina Tour

Visit 4 of the most picturesque towns in Salento on your own—Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, and Galatina. Take a scenic route from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea, between rocky coasts, small bays, and white beaches. Head to your first stop of Otranto, a town in Salento full of history. Every corner highlights the passage of different civilizations, including the Romans, the Byzantines, the Ottomans, and the Aragoneses. Enjoy free time to visit the splendid Cathedral, the Church of Saint Peter in perfect Byzantium style, the Castle, the Towers, the mighty Pelasgi Bastions, and the walls that surrounded the ancient city. Next, reach Santa Maria di Leuca, along the wonderful Adriatic coast, characterized by cliffs overlooking the sea, caves, and bays with a rocky bottom. Along the way, admire Santa Cesarea Terme, Castro Marina, and the Ciolo Fiord. Explore Santa Maria di Leuca, the heel of Italy, where the Ionian Sea meets the Adriatic Sea. From this tip of Puglia, soak in spectacular views of the harbor and the sea, as well as the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae. Continue along the Ionian coast to Gallipoli. This Greek city can be divided into 2 areas: the new village, where the tourist facilities and modern buildings arise, and the old city. The old city is located on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a 17th-century bridge. During your free time, explore the historic center through a labyrinthine weave of narrow streets. Pass by traditional handicraft shops, impressive churches, and aristocratic palazzi. Also worth seeing are the Baroque Cathedral dedicated to St. Agatha, the Angevine Castle, and the Greek Fountain, one of the oldest fountains in Italy. End the tour with a visit to Galatina, a real gem of art, history, and culture. Step inside the Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria to marvel at the frescoes created by Giotto's disciples. You can also visit the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, and the monuments in the historical center.

Natural Beauties of Salento: Leuca & Specchia Day Tour

3. Natural Beauties of Salento: Leuca & Specchia Day Tour

Begin this full-day excursion with an 08:00 pick-up at your preferred location in Lecce and head off to Santa Maria di Leuca, the first stop on the tour. Santa Maria di Leuca is situated on a lovely bay at the southernmost tip of the Salento peninsula, and is a place steeped in history. According to legend, it was here that Aeneas, the Greek hero considered the founder of Roman culture, set foot on land. In addition, Saint Peter is said to have initiated his missionary work in Italy here. Visit the cathedral that was built on the site of a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. On the right-hand side when you enter, you’ll see a relic recovered from the temple. The best way to admire this area and its fascinating geological formations is by boat and there is no shortage of local sailors ready to take you out to sea, off the coast where the world ends. A boat tour to explore the numerous underwater caves which characterize this stretch of coast is recommended. Your chauffeur will drive you to Patù/San Gregorio for lunch, where you’ll enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Bar del Moro, and take in the breathtaking panorama as you savor dishes prepared with typical local products. Next you’ll continue on to medieval Specchia. The historic center was developed during the 15th century around the primitive nucleus of the castle. Visit the underground hypogeous olive press, recently restored, and a testament to the historical importance of olive oil production in Specchia and in Puglia in general. Following your time in Specchia your chauffeur will drive you back to Lecce. A tour guide is not included, a suggestion may be to bring a guidebook. Remember to check on the website the opening times of the location you want to visit and the price of entrance ticket. Entrance fees are not included.

Discovering history and cooking: Galatina, Gallipoli

4. Discovering history and cooking: Galatina, Gallipoli

The pick-up will take place at 9am in your favourite location in Lecce. Your first stop in this driven tour will be in Galatina where Latin and Greek cultures coexist in harmony, an "outdoor museum" that in 2005 was declared City of Art. After Galatina, your driver will take you to Cantina L'Astore in Cutrofiano, about 100 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, where you can have lunch and taste local wines. Finally, your driver will take you to Gallipoli, the tourist center for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. Gallipoli is a trendy town that still keeps the atmosphere of the ancient fishing village. Its name derives from the greek "Kalé polis", which means "beautiful city" and is in fact called Pearl of the Ionian Sea. After a walk downtown, we strongly recommend a stop in Piazza della Dogana, home to the folklorist fish market. Every day the fishermen open their oily fish shoals, sea bream and sea bass, groupers and octopuses.  At the end of the walk your chauffeur will be waiting to take you back to Lecce. A tour guide is not included, a suggestion may be to bring a guidebook. Remember to check on the website the opening times of the location you want to visit and the price of entrance ticket. Entrance fees are not included.
