Full description
When in Turkey be sure to take this fascinating Pergamon tour from Kusadasi. Present day Bergama was the site of the Greek, and later Roman, city of Pergamon, which was ruled for centuries by a powerful local dynasty. The acropolis of Eumenes II remains a major attraction, and there are a host of other sights and a charming old quarter to entertain you. The old town lies at the foot of the city's acropolis, about ten minutes walk from the bus station. The foremost attraction is the Kizil Avlu or “Red Basilica,” a huge edifice on the river not far from the acropolis that was originally built as a temple to the Egyptian god Osiris, but later converted into a basilica by early Christians. The area around the basilica is a jumble of ramshackle buildings, carpet and antique shops, mosques, and maze-like streets. South of here, along the main street is the Archaeological Museum, which has a large collection of locally unearthed relics, including a statue of Hadrian from the Asclepion and various busts of figures like Zeus and Socrates.

A must when in Kusadasi area

You can do many things on your own in Turkey- but a visit to Efes should definately be done with a good guide as it makes the tour much more interesting and understandable while walking among ruins. If ruins are not your thing I would suggest you go anyway- this is the place to see if you only want ruins once in your life. A wlak through Efes really gives a good perspective on life at those times and how developped society was.. A visit to Virgin Marys house is interesting too. Artemis temple, well there is one coloumn left so not that interesting- but off course the guides do their best to explain. Lunch is taken a a typical tourist-on tour- buffet restaurant, food is good and plentiful. Unfortunately one scam typical in Turkey is that prices for drinks are in Euros- nobody expects this in a Turkish restaurant as it should be in Lira- so be sure to check before you order the overpriced drinks. Tour was well planned and interesting.
