Full description
Meet your guide in front of the main entrance to St. Sophia Cathedral to begin your fascinating tour, where you will learn about the history and culture of Ukraine. The cathedral was built in the 11th century, and was the first site in Ukraine to gain UNESCO heritage status. This city symbol is a cradle of Slavic culture and attracts travelers from all over the world. See authentic frescoes and mosaics from the 11th century and a 6-meter Virgin Orans in the main altar of the cathedral. Learn about the Kievan Rus and east Slavic culture before heading to the top of the Bell tower to admire the view of the Sofiivska square and its Monument to B. Khmelnitsky. You may also visit the House of Metropolitan, where temporary exhibitions are held. During the second part of the tour, you guide will show you the splendid St. Michael’s Monastery. Discover the Princess Olga Monument, with statues of Andrew the Apostle on one hand and Cyril and Methodius on the other. The monastery was destroyed in the 1930s by the Soviet regime, but it was completely restored in the late 1990s. Nowadays, it is an active orthodox male monastery.
