Chartwell House Tour: Home of Sir Winston Churchill

1. Chartwell House Tour: Home of Sir Winston Churchill

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and you’ll head off on a private drive through the English countryside on this 1-3 hour tour. The duration of the tour depends on whether you choose to add a visit to Quebec House. Set in the beautiful rolling hills of Kent, and just a short drive south of London, lies the family home of legendary former Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The house is exactly as Churchill left it and much of the gardens are as he arranged them. It's well worth taking some time to explore the gardens and the larger estate. Churchill was one of the most talented figures in history in the political arena, as was also an accomplished writer, historian, and artist. Many of his paintings are on display in a gallery on the estate. Close by is Quebec House, the home of General Wolfe, who captured Quebec. You can visit the house in addition to Chartwell House for an additional fee.

Canterbury: Personalized Private Guided Walking Tour

2. Canterbury: Personalized Private Guided Walking Tour

Explore the historic sights of Canterbury on a guided walking trip with a trained guide. See The Crooked House, the Canterbury Cathedral Precincts, and more, while learning local history. Customize your tour by telling your guide about your group and personal interests beforehand.  Starting in the quaint Buttermarket, site of historic pilgrim inns and old bull stake and home to the imposing Christchurch Gate entrance to the Canterbury Cathedral. From here, set out to explore the narrow cobbled lanes of central Canterbury with its eclectic mix of historic buildings and pilgrim inns, alongside the memorable Canterbury Cathedral Precincts.  Get transported back in time as your guide tells you the stories and dark history of the city. Learn how the city has evolved over the years as you navigate the medieval lanes with their timber-framed buildings and views toward the cathedral.  Spot quirky buildings such as The Crooked House, the Old Weavers House, the infamous ducking stool, and Eastbridge Hospital, a place of hospitality for Pilgrims since 1190. See examples of modern architecture, such as The Marlowe Theatre and its very own moving statue. Before the end of your tour, you’ll get to journey around the outside of the Canterbury Cathedral and possibly see the ruins of the old monastery, the cloisters, and the grounds of the historic King's School. If you have any particular interests, from architecture to gardens or literature, or you're simply with a young family, your personal guide will be happy to tailor your tour (if communicated prior to the tour).

Private Full-Day Tour: Leeds Castle & Chartwell from London

4. Private Full-Day Tour: Leeds Castle & Chartwell from London

Ah, England! Full of beautiful castles, palaces and stately homes. There are so many to choose from, it is hard to know where to start. Especially if you are basing your vacation in London. This full day tour will help you out by taking you to one of the country’s most romantic castles and combining that with a visit to the former home of Winston Churchill, or the birthplace of Vita Sackville West. You will be picked up from your central London hotel and driven in style through lovely English countryside to Leeds Castle. Located in Kent - sometimes referred to as the “Garden of England” – the castle is a former royal residence and was once home to Catherine of Aragon. Surrounded by a peaceful lake, most of the property today dates from the 19th-Century, but it has its origins in the 12th-Century. Whatever its age, it is one of the most loved castles in England and includes a charming maze in its tranquil gardens. Next you can visit Chartwell, former home of Sir Winston Churchill. The Victorian property nestles in peaceful countryside on the outskirts of Westerham. Alternatively, go to Chartwell Knole, one of the largest private houses in England. The childhood home of Vita Sackville West, and providing inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando,” it has a famous collection of 17th and 18th-Century furniture and an exquisite 1,000 acre deer park. If you wish to book the services of a Blue Badge Guide, you may. Otherwise, explore at your leisure before your return to central London.

What people are saying about Kent

Richard was absolutely terrific, one of the best tour guides ever!

Richard is an excellent guide, our trip to Chartwell couldn’t have been any better! He was so knowledgeable, willing to answer any question, and was really enjoyable. He was generous with his time and extremely helpful in understanding more about Churchill and English culture and history. We loved him so much we want to have him as our guide next time we go back to London! Could we possibly get his contact information?

The tour was more than exceptional. Richard provided a personal and touching moment for me. The right words at the right time and his personal thoughts and observations made it one of the most memorable occasions I have had being so close to a magnificent piece of truly living history. Richard and I enjoyed a remarkable day deep in The moment together. Like a true friend. Uncomporable.

The guide was excellent. However, the company failed to confirm the trip until last minute and did not return several emails and phone calls requesting confirmation.

Must do for Churchill fans

Great peek into the life of Churchill. Art Studio looks as if Churchill could walk in at any minute. Our guide, Kevin, was great.

Enjoyed the day very much!

Nigel was a perfect guide for us. Very knowledgeable and a pleasure to join him for the day!
