Full description
The coastal city of Izmir was first settled around 3000 BC and has been under the control of many international powers throughout its colorful history. Examples of this can been seen all through the city. This 4-hour will show you all the important historical sights allow you to appreciate the beauty and charm of this ancient costal city. First up you will visit the ruins of Kadifekale Castle. The castle is situated on Pagos Hill overlooking the city and from here you will have a wonderful view of the city and the coastline. Legend has it that Alexander the Great ordered a castle to be built here after being visited in a dream by a goddess. The first defensive walls, however, date back to 306 BC and were built by Lysimachos, a local successor to Alexander the Great. We will then visit the Agora Museum in the center of the old town. The word Agora traditionally refers to a public square and shopping district. The Izmir Agora dates back to the roman period and was constructed in the 2nd century AD. The agoras of the period were three story stone and marble structures and the ruins here are some of the best in Turkey. Next stop is the Archaeological Museum and its impressive collection of ancient and Roman artifacts recovered from area excavations and Izmir's Agora. The Museum also holds an exhibit of pottery, ceramics and glass, as well as the fascinating reconstructed 3rd-millennium-B.C. tomb. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Clock tower of Izmir. This beautiful monument was a present from the German emperor Wilhelm II, and remains the iconic symbol of the city.

Very interesting tour with many wonderful details

We had an interesting guided tour with a very competent guide who tailored the tour individually to us. The excursion took place even though we were the only guests. The sights were well chosen. The view of Izmir after the elevator ride was terrific. Izmir is a city worth seeing.
