Your visit to Salzburg Fortress starts with either a beautiful 20-30 minute walk or a quick and comfortable ride on Austria's oldest funicular (depending on tour option selected). Today you will find an ultra modern rail system instead of the original funicular, which was powered by water and transported people up and down the hill as early as 1892. Upon arrival at the top of the hill, experience a unique view over the Archbishop's city and the breathtaking landscape of Salzburg's mountains. Soak up the scenery, take photos, then continue with your visit to the medieval fortification complex, representing 900 years of building history. During your self-guided visit, explore all different parts of the castle and see why it was unconquered for more than 1000 years. After the informative 1.5-hour extended bus tour throughout Salzburg, use the included Salzburg 24h Card with free admission to all the major city sights (for example: Salzburg Cathedral, Fortress Hohensalzburg, Mirabell Palace, Getreidegasse or Mozarts Birth House) and free public bus transportation within the city limits to experience all the city has to offer. You can also ride the funicular up to explore one of the oldest fortresses in Europe - Fortress Hohensalzburg. The tour starts at Mirabell Palace, which was built by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1606 and now houses the city's government. The next stop on the tour is Mozarteum (university for music, drama, and fine arts) and the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. You will then see the State Theatre and Mozart’s Residence at Makartplatz. Here you will also see the Church of the Holy Trinity, a Baroque masterpiece built by the architect Fischer von Erlach. After crossing the Salzach River, the tour takes you past the courthouse to Hellbrunn Palace, where you will make a short stop. The palace was built by the court architect Santino Solari in the early 17th century and served as a popular weekend destination for prince archbishops. On the way back to the city center you can admire Frohnburg Palace and Nonnberg Abbey, the oldest existing convent in the German-speaking world. The tour then takes you back to the old town through Siegmundstor. Here you will see the Festival Halls, the Horse Pond, and St. Blasius Church before ending the tour at Mozartplatz.

it was like a private bus tour. going through downtown salzburg, but also to two nearby castles you can`t get to on foot, with interesting historical background. the mozart birthplace doesn`t have much to see, but it was worth visiting to better understand salzburg`s musical roots
