Hobart: Day Trip to Hastings Caves, Tahune and Huon Valley

1. Hobart: Day Trip to Hastings Caves, Tahune and Huon Valley

Spend a day in the natural surroundings of Southern Tasmania on a guided day trip from Hobart, with all entry fees and hotel transfers included. Drive through the scenic Huon Valley, explore the expansive Hastings Caves, swim in thermal springs, and walk above the forest canopy on the Tahune Airwalk. Leaving Hobart, embark on a 2-hour drive and see the orchards of the Huon Valley that gave Tasmania its nickname of "apple isle". Drive through the winding roads of the Deep South as you head to your first destination, Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs. Upon arrival at the Hastings Visitor Centre, walk down into the rainforest, adoring the magnificent ferns along the way. Warm up with a 15 to 20-minute dip in a thermal pool that is fed by natural springs. Then, head underground with a specialist guide to explore the largest dolomite cave open to visitors in Australia. See spectacular stalactites, columns, shawls, and stalagmites. While the cave has no narrow passages, there are 250 stairs with handrails leading in and out of the cave. If you prefer not to enter the cave, you can stay outside to spend time in the forest while your travel companions are on the 45-minute cave tour. Next, explore more of the Huon Valley as you wind through the countryside toward Tahune Adventures. Between October and April, make a stop at the historic Kermandie Hotel which has been the heart of Port Huonsince 1932. Enjoy a delicious lunch (at your expense) with spectacular views over a private marina on the Huon River. In the colder months, stop for lunch at the Tahune Adventures Café. After lunch, venture into the forest at Tahune, walking among the treetops on the Tahune Airwalk – a steel canopy that overlooks the forest floor 50 meters below. Conquer your fear as you cross the river on a swinging bridge. Follow the Huon Pine Trail to see and smell one of Australia’s oldest living trees. Find out how fire has affected the forest and see the natural regeneration that occurs in a forest environment first-hand. Thrill-seekers can opt for an extra activity on the Cable Eagle Hang Glider. Be whisked 250 meters across the Huon River at speeds of up to 40 km per hour. Finally, sit back and relax as you make your way back and reach Hobart by about 5:30 PM.

What people are saying about Hobart

Pick up was on time and our lovely driver gave us a very informative talk enroute to Richmond where we had a good hour to explore before going onto Bonorong Wildlife Park. Enjoyed the day immensely but being an animal lover, my highlight was Bonorong. Feeding the kangaroos, meeting two baby wombats, mischievous Tasmanian Devils and the endearing echidnas. Highly recommend this to anybody.

We had a great day out. The caves were magical and awe inspiring. We also enjoyed the Airwalk and bushwalk. Our guide Gerard was wonderful and made the day special with his local knowledge which he shared with us.

Great tour guide - Hastings Cave tour was fascinating followed by delicious lunch and sky walk/river dip in beautiful forest setting at Tahune.

Super good half day trip where you get to see Richmond, the sanctuary and the animals. The time on each place is perfectly organized

A must see and do the zoodoo zoo was great...my favourite was seeing and hearing the white lion roar.
