Iceland in a nutshell, private Super Jeep

1. Iceland in a nutshell, private Super Jeep

“The Nutshell” is Mountain Taxi’s signature day trip special and a perennial favorite of our guests. A morning drive from Reykjavik in our Mountain Taxi Super jeep brings us to Kaldidalur or "Cold Valley". On our right lies the western side of the massive, nearly 1.000 square kilometers large Langjökull glacier, resting on a torn and twisted volcanic base. Depending on the time of year, weather, and conditions, your expert driver may use his super jeep's extreme abilities to climb the glacial slopes of Langjökull. An opportunity for cold, personal contact with nature's icy element. We drive from the glacier, through Húsafell to Hraunfossar waterfalls, dropping straight out of lava cliff faces into the glacial river Hvítá. From nature to culture, we visit the historic site of Reykholt, home of Iceland’s legendary chieftain and writer Snorri Sturluson. Here, he wrote some of the greatest Sagas of the Icelanders, brilliant literature also preserving the culture and history of the Viking Age to our day. See Iceland's oldest man-made structure, Snorri Sturluson 13th century hot tub. Nearby is Deildartunguhver, the most productive hot spring in the Northern Hemisphere and a source of much of western Iceland’s heating needs. Our day wraps up in Reykjavik, taking in the scenic and historic Hvalfjörður fjord on the way.

Golden Circle Glacier & Northern Lights / Midnights sun First up is Þingvellir National Park, home of Iceland’s ancient parliament. We’ll spend about 20 minutes walking through the park to experience the dramatic mid-Atlantic ridge where the 9000-year-old lava field splits apart. Approaching the home of the great Strokkur geyser in the geothermal area of Haukadalur, you’ll likely be able to see an eruption every 5 to 7 minutes. Spouting boiling hot water into the air at heights of approximately 25 to 30 meters, we’ll stop here to enjoy one of nature’s greatest shows while exploring the colorful hot springs. Next, we’ll be en route to the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall: a two-tiered drop into the white Hvita river with its powerful glacial run-off waters. Then we’re northbound at the beginning of the Kjölur interior mountain road, famous for being the second longest route through the Highlands of Iceland. This road has been around since the early Icelandic settlements and is even mentioned in Icelandic sagas. We’ve come to see the second-largest glacier in the country, Langjökull. In the summer, we’ll drive onto the glacier; in the winter, snowmobile activities take place either on or next to the glacier, depending on the conditions. The snowmobile option allows for an extra hour to explore (or longer, if requested). The next stop is dinner in the countryside before heading back to Reykjavík and hunting for northern lights in the winter or enjoying the midnight sun

What people are saying about Highlands of Iceland

We had a fantastic time with Valþór, he went over and beyond what we hoped of the trip taking us to places well off the beaten track. The jeep we were in was incredible, so much so we couldn’t help but feel a little smug after seeing the mini buses with hoards of people in. Booking a private tour was the best decision we made and his knowledge of Iceland was excellent. We had an amazing time and would strongly recommend spending the extra and having a private tour with Valpor. Thank you again!

We were only 4 people, a very small group. The driver was very nice, if you wanted to stop somewhere along the way to take photos, you just had to ask him. He did not explain much about the sites but he did explain the most important thing.

Fantastic trip, nothing was to much trouble for the guide, an amazing experience :) Only issue was the Black Death, blew me tits off!

We had a wonderful tour with a very knowledgeable tour guide giving us nuggets of information on the history of Iceland!

Perfect trip for sightseeing. We, family of 7, had an Amazing day.
