Full-Day Downton Abbey, Oxford and Bampton Tour from London
- Duration: 10 hours
Explore Oxford, the City of Dreaming Spires, home to one of the world’s oldest universities. Admire the architectural highlights of the many colleges. Next on this 10-hour tour is a visit to Bampton, the setting for the exterior village scenes in Downton Abbey. See the church, the house of Matthew Crawley's mother, homes transformed into the post office and various pubs. Head to Highclere Castle, the country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon. The tour of the Castle’s public rooms includes the magnificent main hall, the library, sitting rooms and other rooms featured in Downton Abbey. Take home a copy of Lady Carnarvon's book as a souvenir of your visit.
Very knowledgeable guide. Probably packed too much in one day. Would have like to have additional time at Highclere castle
Day 1: Get your sunglasses and sun cream ready, you’re departing London and heading to the sunny, southern Isle of Wight. First, head to the ancient port-city of Portsmouth. This bustling spot blends modern marvels with centuries of sea-faring stories. You can grab a bite to eat here before your guide picks you up and takes you to the ferry at Gunwharf Terminal. It takes less than an hour and there’s plenty of onboard refreshments. Your first stop on the Isle of Wight is the important religious site of Quarr Abbey. The building here is beautiful and combines French, Byzantine, and Moorish designs. Then, you will get to meet some real local heroes. In the evening, you'll arrive at the unforgettably quaint village of Shanklin in time for an early dinner. Day 2: Today, you’re going to discover the unmissable highlights of the Isle of Wight. After an enjoyable breakfast you will venture...
Departing from London in the morning, you’ll head straight for one of England’s most history-rich cities, Winchester. Ambling the paths and lanes of the ancient city, you’ll have free time to stop by the glorious cathedral, the ancient mill, a bevy of cute cafes, and more than enough museums. After you’ve explored the picturesque town, it’s time to head for the boozy destination of the day – Laverstoke Mill, where one of the world’s most popular gins, Bombay Sapphire, is distilled. But it’s not just the booze that’s brilliant at the Laverstoke Mill; the exhibition and Victorian architecture are as interesting as they are beautiful. Once you’ve had enough gin for the day, it’s time to head home. The tour makes a short stop for refreshments at the quaint riverside town of Runnymede, before arriving back in London in the evening.
Begin with a pickup from your central London hotel and a drive through London and out into the Oxfordshire countryside. Your first stop will be in Oxfordshire, where you will visit the villages that became the village of Downton.
Have photographs outside Matthew Crawley’s house, and see the Hospital, the village church, and the two village pubs. Discuss the filming with the locals and visit inside a village home used in the filming (owner being in of course). Have time to buy Downton souvenirs before moving on. Visit several other villages, plus a farm, which will be a secret to surprise you on the day. Leaving the villages behind you, start to head cross country to Highclere Castle. On the way to the castle, take an authentic countryside pause, stopping for lunch at an old English pub.
Arrive at Highclere Castle after lunch, where your tour continues. Your expert guid...
The experience begins with pickup from London and leaves the city behind as you head towards Southampton via Winchester. Once the joint capital of England, Winchester has been associated with royalty as far back as the famous Alfred the Great, and boasts an array of historical landmarks including a medieval cathedral. Upon arrival, head to the incredible Winchester Cathedral, the resting place of many Saxon Kings, as well as King William Rufus, and the novelist Jane Austen. Soak up the impressive interior of the building, which has the longest nave in Europe and an original medieval tiled floor. Learn about the history of the cathedral, which in 1554 was used as the venue for the wedding of King Philip of Spain to the infamous ‘Bloody Mary’, also known as Queen Mary Tudor. During your time in Winchester, you can also visit the Great Hall, a seat of many English Kings and Queen, and hom...

First of all, we had very good care from Frank and Carlos! Many thanks to the two for the excellent support! The bus was very comfortable and the schedule was well thought out. Of course you could spend more and more time everywhere, but after 10 hours you are really filled with wonderful impressions.
Just fantastic. The bus driver was very friendly and reliable, the tour guide was also very friendly, her explanations and stories were very informative. All in all the whole tour was wonderful. Anyone who loves the Downton Abbey series will simply be overwhelmed.
This tour was not disappointing in anyway! The length of time spent at Oxford, Bampton & Highclere Castle was perfect. I recommend having afternoon tea, which is reasonably priced, at the castle to take in the views. It's a must see for any Downton Abbey fan!
Everything was perfect, the bus was comfortable, the driver and guide were super friendly and were able to make everything interesting!
It met our expectations. The guide, Frank, very nice and friendly and a great professional.
