Reykjavík: Volcano Eruption Site Hike and Geothermal Tour

1. Reykjavík: Volcano Eruption Site Hike and Geothermal Tour

Iceland's Geldingadalur Valley now had multiple craters erupting for the first time in 7000 years, the Fagradalsfjall Volcano crater being the most active. Start with a pickup in Reykjavík before heading on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views. The first stop is Lake Kleifarvatn, where you will enjoy scenes of the black beach and surrounding mountains. Next, get your hiking gear on and hike towards Geldingadalur Valley to see live volcanic activity coming from Fagradalsfjall Volcano. You will be able to enjoy your packed lunch on the hike while seeing lava flowing from the volcano. After, drive by the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the volcanos of the past have created land formations now covered by soft green lava moss. You'll then get to see and feel the Gunnuhver Hot Springs, where boiling waters and steam will reignite your senses. Only a 5-minute drive from there, you'll stop by the photogenic Reykjanes Lighthouse and the Valhnúkamöl Boulder Ridge to admire the cliffs and sea stacks formed by the Atlantic Ocean. The last stop before heading back to Reykjavík is the Bridge Between Continents where earthquakes have made a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It's a fun photo opportunity and a chance to walk between the continents.

From Reykjavik: Reykjanes Volcanic Hike & Blue Lagoon Option

2. From Reykjavik: Reykjanes Volcanic Hike & Blue Lagoon Option

After complimentary pickup in Reykjavik, take a scenic drive along the lava-shaped coast toward the first stop. Once there, follow the trail to the Geldingadalir Valley under the care of your experienced guide. Since it first exploded into life in March 2021, Iceland’s newest volcano has sent rivers of molten lava flowing across this rugged wilderness. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to see the youngest mountain in the world, and this is your opportunity to see the brand-new jet-black fields of lava for yourself. Be led by knowledgeable guides to the volcano site and be shown how this unstoppable force has dramatically changed the Icelandic landscape. Before your arrival, be the first to see Seltun, an almost lunar landscape of red rocks, orange sediments, hissing mud pots and hot springs; be dazzled by the multi-colored craters and steam vents. The Reykjanes peninsula features even more fascinating geological gems. Next, visit the Gunnuhver Hot Springs, a group of active mud pools and steam vents named after a local witch who in folklore met her doom here, so watch your step. After, take a short 5-minute drive to Valahnúkamöl, stunning bird cliffs and basalt columns rising from the sea. Spend some time here enjoying the views of the iconic sights, including Reykjanesviti Lighthouse, the oldest still-standing structure of its kind in Iceland. From there, move on to the Bridge Between Continents, a place where a small metal footbridge straddles the ever-widening gap between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, spanning the Mid-Atlantic Ridge just a few feet above the volcanic sands that stand between the diverging continents. As the final optional part of the tour, discover one of the most popular places in Iceland, the iconic Blue Lagoon where milky sea waters contrast with black lava fields. Here, soak all your cares away for 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon SPA. Enjoy a perfect way to relax and reflect on an unforgettable day spent on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Very interesting tour, definetely to recommend! It covered many places but without being too rushed or tiring. The hike to Fagradalsfjall was quite exciting and my favourite part, though the geothermical spots and the bridge between the two continents are worth the visit too! Really well organised, the guide was giving good explanations about the locations and a fun person!

The guide was very friendly and thoughtful. He stopped to show more places than the planned, so we could know amazing landscapes near by the volcano. The group was small (8 persons), and all were very nice and easy to interact. The landscapes are terrific! It is worth!
