Wroclaw: Lower Silesia, Ksiaz Castle, & Complex Osówka Tour

1. Wroclaw: Lower Silesia, Ksiaz Castle, & Complex Osówka Tour

The Church of Peace in Świdnica is the largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe, built in the former Silesia in the mid-17th Century amid the religious strife that followed the Peace of Westphalia. Constrained by the physical and political conditions, the Churches of Peace bear testimony to the quest for religious freedom and are a rare expression of Lutheran ideology in an idiom generally associated with the Catholic Church. Built outside the city walls, made of wood or clay and built in less than a year, now placed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Książ is the third largest castle in Poland, located on a majestic rock cliff by the side of the Pelcznica River. Beautifully surrounded by the forest at the height of 395 meters above sea level, the castle is often called ‘the Pearl of Lower Silesia’. Such a location corresponding to the size of the building is rare in Europe. In 1943, Hitler’s paramilitary organization had stormed into the castle and began to construct one of the most important quarters for Adolf Hitler. Complex Osówka is part of a construction project conducted by Nazi Germany between 1943-1945 (Codename Riese). Mysterious structures nicknamed “Underground City” still await to unveil their secrets. Discover Hitler’s last and biggest quarters in Lower Silesia.

Wroclaw: WW2 Tour to Project Riese & Gross-Rosen Museum

2. Wroclaw: WW2 Tour to Project Riese & Gross-Rosen Museum

Your driver will meet you at your hotel and drive first to Project Riese which takes around 1.5 hours. It is a very nice ride through mountains and countryside.  Once you arrive, explore the Project Riese site. Learn how Project Riese was the codename for an impressive construction initiated by Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1945, consisting of seven underground structures located in the Owl Mountains and Książ Castle. Explore this extraordinary network of underground caverns, all in different states of completion. See the Osówka site which is called the Underground City. Then you can pause for lunch, or your driver can take you straight to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, a German network of Nazi concentration camps built and operated during World War II. The main camp was located in the German village of Gross-Rosen. At its peak in 1944, the Gross-Rosen complex had up to 100 sub-camps located in eastern Germany, Czechoslovakia, and on the territory of occupied Poland. The population of all Gross-Rosen camps at that time accounted for some 11% of the total number of inmates incarcerated in the Nazi concentration camp system.  In the museum you will watch a short film about the camp and then you will have up to 2 hour to see the indoor and outdoor exhibition before your driver takes you back to your hotel in Wroclaw.

We were picked up by Pawel from our hotel and we’re driven in a sedan instead of the usual bus. Our guide provided an interesting and varied commentary. We were shown by our guide to various entry points and then left to enjoy the tour around Ksiaz castle with an excellent audio guide. The visit to the Tunnels at Osowka were the least interesting being very dark and with uneven flooring. We had audio guides in English but a torch or headlamp would have helped. We were with a large group of Polish students. The castle and the the church of Peace were the highlights and a great tour guide who was a history buff. Highly recommended.

Time is always short for this type of tour, but our dear Spartacus has definitely put me and my partner at ease, not rushing and explaining each monument step by step. Top organization, abundant snacks with water, courteous and local expert

The driver was excellent! He was telling us about everything we were swing, we were traveling with a kid and he was making sure that she was also part of the tour. 100% recommended

A very interesting tour, nice atmosphere, and Mr. Bartek the guide with a lot of knowledge and personal culture.

Great excursion, good driver. The excursion was very informative
