You’ll travel along many secondary roads, as you explore São Miguel on the way to Furnas. Pass small villages on the southern coastal road before stopping at the Nossa Senhora da Paz chapel for the scenic views over Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s first capital. Be sure to bring a swimsuit on this full-day 4WD tour to enjoy the thermal waters at Poça da Dona Beija. Dona Beija is part of a series of iron-rich hot springs warmed by the volcanic activity that is part of the history of the Furnas Valley. The springs arise from underground thermal aquifers that are in permanent contact with rocks subjected to high temperatures. The average temperature of the water is 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Enjoy cozido for lunch, a typical stew-like dish that is cooked for 6-8 hours in the hot springs. Along the way, you will visit a number of locations with stunning landscapes and unique and intriguing features, such as Vila Franca do Campo, where you can see the famous islet, a tea factory, and views from various spots. Upon arriving at Furnas Azores, admire the lake and its geysers, which are surrounded by lush nature.

Set in the middle of a 3-mile (5-km) wide volcanic crater, Sete Cidades’ forest-blanketed slopes and lake scattered valleys are the ideal place for an off-road adventure. Explore the area with a local guide and make a special trip to Ponta da Ferraria, where thermal pools offer unique swimming chances (optional).

Be picked up in Ponta Delgada and head towards Nordeste for a full-day jeep tour of the region. Stop at Sallto do Cavalo viewing point. The lookout point provides views of the north-eastern side of the island, the Furnas Valley, and the coastline. After your stop at Sallto do Cavalo viewpoint, you’ll head to the Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões. Located on the the slopes of Serra da Tronqueira, Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões follows the Ribeira dos Caldeirões water stream. Here you’ll see an abundance of local flora, including ferns and cedar trees. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant located in a Nordeste village. After lunch, you’ll stop at Serra da Tronqueira, where you’ll have panoramic views of the island. Visit Povoação, which was the first populated village on the island. After your visit, stop at Vila Franca do Campo, which is known for its beach inlets.
