Madeira: Canyoning Ribeira do Cidrão

1. Madeira: Canyoning Ribeira do Cidrão

The beautiful Ribeira do Cidrão canyon lies in the middle of the island of Madeira, within the valley that the nuns from Santa Clara Convent fled to when Funchal was attacked by pirates in 1566, giving it its name as the Nun's Valley. After a walk of approximately 20 minutes on a dirt road and along a levada, the canyoning adventure begins. Along the way, get ready to conquer six rappels, the highest being 15 meters. Discover a series of refreshing pools that you can jump and slide into, and take in the beautiful mountain views which serve as a constant backdrop. After the canyon, walk another 20 minutes back up.

Madeira: 3-Hour Level-1 Canyoning Experience

2. Madeira: 3-Hour Level-1 Canyoning Experience

Located some 300 miles off the coast of Africa, and more than 600 miles off mainland Europe, the volcanic island of Madeira offers some of the best landscape for outdoor activities, and on this 3-hour tour you will try one of the best. Canyoning takes place on a mountainous watercourse. To overcome the obstacles of nature, you have to swim, jump, and rappel in small waterfalls. The route of the Chão da Lagoa offers 2 rappels, the largest some 60 feet (18 meters) high. All you need to bring is a towel, bathing suit, sports shoes (that you don't mind getting wet) and a change of clothes. All other equipment, including safety harness and wetsuit, is provided. Armed with a sense of adventure, hike through the lush landscape of Madeira - legendary for its floral diversity - along rocky paths to the rappel site. Once you are safely harnassed, abseil down the waterfalls. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried it before; the guides are extremely safety conscious and professional. You will leave with a new found interest in this exhilarating sport, and perhaps a desire to take it to level 2.

Madeira: Half-Day Coasteering Tour

3. Madeira: Half-Day Coasteering Tour

"Coasteering" is a sports activity that allows one to progress along the coast, whether along a beach or a cliff. Along the way you can make use of swimming, diving, snorkeling, climbing, traveling through caves or tunnels, and jumping into the water. Madeira has excellent conditions for this sport due to its lava and rocks shores, allowing visitors to swim in the crystal clear warm water. The waters form pristine views, with the mountain flowing almost into the sea. These activities take place in the southeast coast of Madeira, specifically in Baia d’Abra (Caniçal), a natural park of breathtaking beauty. The jumps, which are all optional, are between 1 and 10 meters high. Coasteering can be done by families, groups, or individuals of all ages, providing they can swim. Throughout the whole route, participants will be led by the guides and instructors who will assist everyone in terms of safety techniques and all procedures.
