  • Pass through 5 tunnels of natural basaltic rock
  • Enjoy the views of the Caldeirão Verde waterfall
Full description
Caldeirão Verde means green cauldron in Portuguese and well describes the environs of this 6.5-kilometer walk. This half-day levada walk takes you through the highest area of Santana. A levada is an aqueduct or irrigation channel that is unique to the island of Madeira. This is without doubt one of the most beautiful levadas on Madeira. Located in the Laurissilva forest the highlights of the trail include fantastic views of São Jorge and a series of tunnels of natural basaltic rock. Start out in the emerald green Queimadas rainforest and enjoy scenic views over villages as you follow alongside the winding levada and through 5 short natural tunnels. When you arrive at Caldeirão Verde you’ll marvel at the majestic waterfall.

    Fun walk and interesting info

We did a group walk with 13 other people. It was a fun 4 hr ( 2 there 2 back) walk. The guide was friendly and told us some interesting Madeira facts. There are 4 tunnels to walk through on the walk which make it a bit more fun. Only issue is because its a group walk you can feel a bit frog marched, or you spend time waiting for the slow people at the back to catch up! The waterfall at the end is very pretty.

Beautiful walking route with a lot of variety between forest and a number of tunnels. Professional guide who explained a lot about the area and in between a picnic at the waterfall. It is a brisk walk of approximately 14.5 km but well worth it.
