As the island is very quiet at present I benefited from a one to one guided experience (actually two to one as a trainee was tagging along). That apart, my young female guide was knowledgeable, engaging and very open to my various (sometimes off-topic) questions and filled in the gaps in my limited knowledge if the island and its history most effectively. Always best to take a tour like this to better understand the place you’re visiting, and as a bonus, personal gratuities are politely declined with the suggestion that a donation to support student activities is preferred .

A really great way to find out about Funchal and the island of Madiera. Our guide Katlya is from Iceland and speaks excellent English. She was very knowledgeable and brought the island's history to life with a visit to Blandys, the Scots Kirk, the Jesuits College and cathedral to name but a few. Highly recommend the tour. We were on a cruise and pre-booked online. The meeting point is about 25 mins walk from the cruise ship so worth booking the early tour before the day gets too hot.

Both student and senior guide were quite passionate on telling the history and the special aspects regarding the city of Funchal. They were well prepared and they guided the tour in a very friendly spirit. I collected a valuable amount of information and now I am able to use this knowledge to appreciate and understand the city while walking around by myself. I really enjoyed the tour!

This was a 2 hour walk was full of interesting historical information. Going inside some of the buildings and churches you would normally just walk past. Our student guide Katlan was so knowledgeable and friendly. It’s well worth the cost.

Easy to find meeting point and very knowledgeable guide! It covered not only the history but also tips on local food and restaurants in the old town area of Funchal. It covers more than 6km of walking in total so wear comfortable shoes!
