Admire the 5.17-meter marble statue representing the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in Florentine art. The statue soon came to symbolize the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family.    In the adjacent rooms, which were part of two former convents, important works of art are collected here from the Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts and from suppressed convents.  Recently the Gallery has been further enriched by the important collection of old musical instruments from the Cherubini Conservatory, the Department of Musical Instruments.

It’s a bit chaotic outside trying to find the window and then line up but once inside it’s really good. I love this statue and the detail and it’s easy enough to get a look at despite all the people. There’s also some other interesting things in the other areas to look at. Don’t miss this!

I am not a particular fan of this type of art and I've seen the image (or so I thought) so many times I wasn't particularly excited about it but was told I should see David, at least. He is extraordinary. Beautiful. The fluidity of his lines give the optical illusion of actual movement at times. And that this beauty was hewn from a single piece of marble is hard to fathom. I kept going back to him. I still feel the joy of him several days later. If you do only a couple of things in Florence, let this be one of them.

Paid for the audio and had to go back out to receive it after going in, was very busy and I couldn't really follow the audio description's so just wandered around and seen what I could. Very beautiful and well worth visiting. I loved the David and other works of art.
