Designed by Italian painter and architect Giotto, the Campanile is a stunning example of Florentine Gothic architecture. The free-standing structure comprised of polychrome marble encrustations and buttresses with a style and colors matching the nearby Florence Cathedral. It took about 25 years to build it and the construction began in 1334 and was completed in 1359 with two breaks from the work in between 1348 and 1350. There are seven bells in Giotto’s Bell Tower or (Giotto’s Campanile) and the exterior facade comprised of hexagonal panels depicts the history of mankind from Genesis with four Pisano statues in the niches. And the panoramic view from the top is one of the most picturesque in Florence.
