Évora - 8Hours Day Tour up to 3Pax, Private Tour

8. Évora - 8Hours Day Tour up to 3Pax, Private Tour

Évora, has a rich history that goes back more than five millennia, as demonstrated by nearby megalithic monuments such as the Zambujeiro Anta and the Cromlech. Some neolithic settlements developed in the region. Another village of this type is the so-called "castle of giraldo", inhabited continuously from the 3rd millennium to the first millennium BC and sporadic occupation in medieval times. The visigothic period corresponds to a dark time of the city. At the time of Muslim domination, the city experienced a new period of economic and political splendor, thanks to its privileged location. The walls were rebuilt and an alcázar and a mosque were built in the area of the roman acropolis. The growth of the city out of the primitive Moorish fence led to the construction of a new belt of walls in the fourteenth century, during the reign of D. Dinis. The main squares of the city were "praça do giraldo" (originally "praça grande") and "largo das portas de moura and rossio". The "giraldo square", home of an annual fair since 1275, was also the site of the Town Hall (since the fourteenth century) and the jail. Évora is testimony to various styles and aesthetic currents, being over time endowed with works of art to the point of being classified by "unesco", in 1986, as a Common Heritage of Humanity.

My friend and I had a wonderful day of fun and learning. Joao was incredibly knowledgeable about the entire area around Evora and Monsaraz. Joao told us all about almond farming. We stopped to examine cork trees and learned about the role of black pigs in raising cork and the whole sustainable industry. We were the only people on the tour and also in the pottery demonstrations. The pottery visit was not one of those high pressure sales jobs. We wandered in while the potters were making their wares and could chat with them. There were only a couple of other people in the workspace. It was mostly filled with workers who were part of a 7th generation family business. Monsaraz (population of about 30) was beautifully located on a mountaintop and gave us a good background on medieval times. There is even a bull ring and a couple of small shops. Try looking at the pottery there as well. Wine tasting was awesome! If you want to truly get a good history of the area, ask for Joao!

It was incredible experience to visit Monsaraz little mediaval town located on the top of the hill with picturesque views. On the way to Monsaraz we visited family owned pottery fabric and learned a lot about pottery making technologies. Then we made a stop to see cork trees ang learned about cork harvesting. Our guide Joao is the best guide ever! He shared a lot of stories, made our trip unforgetable. The cherry on the cake was the wine testing experience in the wine shop in Monsaraz. Nuno was very friendly host of testing there. We enjoyed the tour and highly recommend it as well as Joao as a tour gude for everyone visiting Evora! Thanks a lot Joao and Nuno. We spent several weeks in various parts of Portugal and we can easily say that this tour was by far our favorite! João was an amazing guide who educated us on the history, traditions, and culture of Evora. He was extremely knowledgeable and curated the tour perfectly so that every aspect of the tour together was connected in one large picture. Although it was very cloudy and cold the day of our tour, Monsaraz was absolutely beautiful and the final wine tasting was accompanied with a breathtaking view of the country. We will definitely be returning with all our friends and family. 10/10 recommed!

It was enjoyable to learn about this area’s primary products, the cork trees and wine growing. Our guide Joanna was knowledgeable and accommodating.

Our guide Joao was fabulous… very friendly, engaging and knowledgeable with all things Portugal! Strongly recommend this tour and guide.
