Ferrara: Guided City Highlights Walking Tour

2. Ferrara: Guided City Highlights Walking Tour

This classical half-day tour of the old town will take you from the exterior of the imposing Castello Estense to the interior of a majestic Romanesque Cathedral, and from the Jewish Ghetto to the streets of the Medieval and Renaissance historical city center. Your 2.5-hour guided tour of Ferrara starts with Castello Estense, which dominates the city center. Surrounded by a moat filled with water, this castle was built in 1385 as a stronghold of political and military control of the city. Continuous renovations, at least until the 16th century, give the castle the shape that we still admire today. Next, visit the Romanesque Cathedral, built in the 12th century opposite the Town Hall. Construction on the Bell Tower began in the 15th century, but never ended, designed by the famous artist Leon Battista Alberti. In the 17th century, because of a terrible fire, the interior of the Cathedral was rebuilt in Baroque style. Today, visiting the interior is an experience that takes you through many eras of Italian history.

Ferrara: Private Walking Tour w/ a Local Guide

3. Ferrara: Private Walking Tour w/ a Local Guide

Ferrara is a splendid city of art, ideal to be enjoyed walking through its streets and discovering its Renaissance character, revealed on every corner. The famous Este family governed here for three centuries and gave the city the appearance it has today: a uniquely planned city, which harmoniously fuses the mediaeval and Renaissance styles and represents Europe's first modern city. Thanks to these characteristics, Ferrara gained its UNESCO World Heritage status. Through this guided walking tour led by your private guide, you'll get to see the main and most important sites in town, like the famous Este Castle (the castle of the historic Este family), Piazza Savonarola, Palazzo Arcivescovile, the harmonious Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral of Ferrara, Palazzo Marchionale, the particular Jewish ghetto (the region's largest and oldest, which prevailed from 1627 until 1859) and Via delle Volte.  Get ready to take great pictures of this hidden Italian gem.

3-Hour Ferrara Segway PT Authorized Tour

4. 3-Hour Ferrara Segway PT Authorized Tour

Ride a Segway around the carefully laid-out streets of Ferrara and you will trace a route that holds a unique spot in European history. This is the birthplace of modern town planning. One of the main centers of artistic and intellectual life during the Italian Renaissance, Ferrara is also the first planned city of modern times. And the design is unique and original, as opposed to the Roman layout of Italy's other urban centers. The ruling Este family cultivated some of the greatest minds and artists in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, and their Estense Castle comes early in the tour. Continuing on you come to the enclosed world of the Crema Palace cloisters, the unusual Municipal Theater courtyard and the famous staircase of the ancient Ducal Palace. You also see the Gothic 12th-century cathedral, ringed by medieval shops, and the old inns along Adelardi Street.
