Naples: Herculaneum Skip-the-Line Tour with Archaeologist

1. Naples: Herculaneum Skip-the-Line Tour with Archaeologist

This tour will take you on a guided visit of the world’s best preserved Roman city, Herculaneum. This was a rich city of merchants and nobility, whose lives ended dramatically fast with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago.  See the waterfront, where the remains of more than 300 people lie, who died trying to escape by sea. Explore the Samnite house, the thermal baths, the Temple of the Augustales, and the Forum. Discover the house of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Gymnasium, and much more. During this experience you can see not only stone, marble, and ceramics that survived the eruption, but also carbonized wood, and paintings and mosaics even more exquisite than those found in Pompeii. Learn about life in this city, and the blast that destroyed it, on this 2-hour guided tour.

Pompeii: Small-Group Pompeii and Herculaneum Tour

2. Pompeii: Small-Group Pompeii and Herculaneum Tour

This tour consists of a pleasant walk around the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the ashes of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Your tour will be conducted in English, and will cater only to a small group with a maximum of 15 people. During the infamous eruption, Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried by tons of pumice and volcanic ash, which preserved many things and materials in amazing conditions. Following your tour in Pompeii, you will have time to grab some lunch, or to stroll through the souvenir shops outside the ruins. Afterwards, take the Circumesuviana train leading to Ercolano (a 20 minute trip), where you will start your walk through the ruins. There, discover that Herculaneum is much smaller, but better preserved than Pompeii. While Pompeii had been covered in four meters of ashes, an avalanche of mud 20 meters thick had buried Herculaneum. Second floors of the buildings, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings, and mosaics are still preserved and on display. The site gives a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle which was enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Roman Empire.

What people are saying about Ercolano

Luciano Leone was a very special guide. He made sure everyone’s questions were answered and he made a point to keep the several young children on our tour interested. I’m so glad I paid for the tour rather than visiting the site on my own.

Michele Lamberti with Askos Tours was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable and great storyteller. We went on a Sunday and the other couple in our group didn’t show so Michele gave us a private tour which brought Herculaneum to life.

Diego was a fantastic guide. We visited on a rainy day, but he still really brought it to life. I would definitely recommend.

Meet with our guide Diego, who was really knowledgeable and showed us around the site with a lot of passion

Diego was a passionate student of archeology and made the entire tour interesting and enjoyable.
