Vikos gorge is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Greece. The gorge consists of limestone and dolomite formations dating back to 150 million years ago and vertical walls extending up to a height of 1700 m. The hike starts from Monodendri village with a 45-minute descent towards the river bed. The trail is ascending and descending surrounded by steep mountain tops and dense forests of deciduous trees and 1800 plant species. Before ascending to Vikos village, visit the Voidomati Springs, Greece's cleanest and coldest river, with an average all year temperature of 8.5°C. If you are brave you might want to try the experience of a very refreshing dive in the crystal clear waters during summer months. The hike finishes at Vikos village, after a 1-hour ascent from the Voidomatis springs.

Where Valia Calda begins, we meet beautiful landscapes, such as Vovousa with the Aoos river that passes through the village, high peaks, steep slopes, stunning colors, spectacular trees, and a strong taste of the wild beauty of the Pindos National Park, combined all together in a magical mountain landscape that nature has given us. An ideal excursion for nature lovers and people who love swimming in rivers. Our excursion starts with Valia Calda as our first destination, and we will head to the core. From the heart of the National Park, we will start our hike to the natural pools of the Arkoudorema stream. Once we reach the natural pools, we will enjoy swimming and return to the vehicle to cook our traditional meal. Then we will head to Vovousa. Our route there gives us an incredible landscape with tall black pines, streams, and high peaks. In Vovousa, we will take a break, and whoever wishes can swim in the clear waters of the Aoos river, under the bridge of Vovousa. Finally, we will visit the source lake Aoos and the incredible mountain landscapes around the lake on our return.

Explore the traditions of Epirus on the guided walking tour of food and culture. Learn about the historic crafts of the area by speaking with true locals and admire the city streets and alleys as you walk. Enter the castle of Ioanna, and try local cheeses, wines, and cold cuts. The day starts most sweetly, trying the traditional bougatsa recipe of Grandma Maria. The route through the picturesque alleys of the city leads to an old hangout of the city, the Gyali Kafene, full of aromas, where you enjoy some freshly-roasted coffee. Then, head to the city's historic center, where the city's craftsmen used to be, and meet Mr. Dimitris. He will introduce you to the old folk art of silversmithing and tell the history of silversmithing from the time of the Ottoman Empire. The next destination is the famous castle of Ioannina. Before entering the castle, visit two friends from Metsovo. They have set up their traditional delicatessen shop and are waiting for you to try their traditional cheeses, cold cuts, and wine that they have been producing for 40 years. Find yourself in the castle afterward, where you wander the narrow alleys and learn the castle's history, Ali Pasha and Kyra-Frosini. After a beautiful walk to the castle and its monuments, end up in a small restaurant to cook a traditional pie and try the local flavors of Epirus.

4. From Monodendri: Vikos Gorge Trekking with River Swimming

Vikos gorge is the deepest canyon in the world. The Vikos Gorge, with a length of 20 km, walls that range from 120–490 m deep, and a width ranging from 400 m to just a few meters at its narrowest part, is listed by the Guinness Book of records. The Vikos Gorge has been designated as a world geopark by UNESCO. Most of the route has no elevation differences except for the start (downhill) and the end of it (uphill). In the middle of the trail visitors may refill their canteens from a spring. At the end of the trail a tour of the nearby Voidomatis springs and the monastery of Panagia will be provided. Visitors also have the chance to swim in Voidomatis cold blue waters and drink water from the springs. Trekking time is about 6 – 8 hours. Difficulty level: moderate. Equipment needed: mountain sports shoes or hiking boots, waterproof jacket.
