What people are saying about Volendam
This was an absolutely fantastic tour - it knocked our socks off way exceeding my expectations. It was relatively quick (half day) with three great sites and a boat ride. Above all, the tour guide Steve (Esteph?) the Rock was just incredible! The other tour guides were excellent too, very kind and competent, but Steve the bus driver was out of this world. He played a piano keyboard on the bus and sang songs (extremely well), was incredibly friendly and sincerely interested in making it the best tour ever, helped the guides during all the tours, was uber enthusiastic, took time to walk with us and show us things himself, carried souvenir bags for other guests, etc. I'm use to the bus driver remaining silent and driving the bus. Steve is nothing less than a prodigy when it comes to this line of work. I've never experienced a tour guide like him and couldn't recommend him higher. I'd go WAY out of my way to get on his bus with him and his fellow tour guides. Not enough words, but thanks!
If I have to put in one word - wonderful! From start to end, we were taken good care of, lots of interesting facts and stories were presented by the knowledgable guide Sandra (Thank you so much, Sandra! And thank you, Nick for he safe driving!). So many activities and hands-on experience in various workshops were included that there was not one minute to feel bored! Great value for what it is worth and weather was favourable too which is always a bonus in windy, wintry, mid-March Holland! Really pleased with the choice of places and quite informative - one gets to see the Netherlands in a snapshot of a few hours! Highly recommend!!! If you do one thing outside of Amsterdam - that has to be it! PS: quite strict with leaving times but that is not a bad thing as when travelling as a group, and visiting more than one place. It is only fair to everybody- so make sure you have a good watch with you!
I really liked the first part of this trip in which we saw the windmills and we have the chance to enter in the mill that cut the woods. Also the houses all round in Holland style were very nice. Then we moved to Marken to discover how Holland make up the characteristic clogs. During the transfer in the bus an expert guide explained us some cultural aspect of the country and also an audio guide was available in the bus in different languages. After Marken we took a boat to go to visit the typical cheese factory in Volendam, in my opinion we spent too much time in Volendam (better to spend this time visiting the windmills) also because it is a very small village and there was no much to do or visit in it. In our free time we walked around the houses and we had a drink.
The Windmills with the landscapes were truly amazing. It was green everywhere even if it was january. It was also interesting to see how the cheese, stroopwaffels and wooden shoes are made. Volendam and Marken were quite cold places and windy too. I recommend to wear warm clothes at winter time. I would also recommend this trip for my friends in Finland.
I was pleasantly surprised that the tour offered so much to see and do, and was so much fun! And in light of its costs, this tour offers excellent value for money. Credit goes to the team of professional guides (Ian, Semlina & Harold) and driver.
