What people are saying about Vatican Necropolis
The tour was excellent EXCEPT for the directions on where to meet the guide. PLEASE rethink & revise them. Even Swiss Guards could not advise us on reading them. We finally located the mobile post office & waited there. Wrong post office!! I have seen the Scavi before so I knew where to go to enter. The Guards allowed us through. The staff in the office denied any help/advice. After much discussion, it was clear that we were just not going to walk away. One man had a change of heart and made a phone call & suddenly a young man from Get Your Guide came & took us to our guide. If I had not had a clear remembrance of the location of the Scavi entrance, we would missed the tour and lost our $200. Please save others such a bad experience & rewrite/revise your directions. we are 3 smart people who couldn't get it right with the help of Swiss Guards.
Had been to St. Peter's before but not to the necropolis. This is a must-see tour. The guide was very knowledgeable. One tip for the tour. It would have been useful to walk the route of the necropolis tour on the present Basilica level, especially since a portion of the Gaius Trophy is visible in the niche in the Confessio. It would also have been useful to point out the location of the Clementine Chapel from the upper level. These sites got explained while we were touring the necropolis and crypt levels, but it would help first time visitors to point them out from the upper level before going below. Our group toured the basilica first so a spatial orientation to what we would be seeing just a few feet below would have been an easy fit.
The tour was very informative and well laid out. It brought out details that you would have to take hours to dig out on your own. The guide was very knowledgeable and could answer all the questions posed to her.
This is an amazing tour! I highly recommend it. It's amazing to think you are standing on a path that has been there for almost 2,000 years! An archaeologists dream!
A little bit rush but I guess the place is quite big and the guide has to be a bit fast. We spent about 1 hr + inside basilica and another 1 hour in the necropolis.
