5 unmissable artworks at the Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi Gallery is one of Florence's oldest and most popular museums, yet still vast enough to challenge even the most ravenous art lover. Our advice? Quality over quantity! Here's a selection of the best paintings to help you decide what to see.

Virgin and Child with Saint Anne (Room 7)

Virgin and Child with Saint Anne (Room 7)

Masaccio's mastery of color and dimension made him the first great painter of the Early Renaissance. His Virgin is juxtaposed with Gothic angels probably painted by Masolino.

Birth of Venus (Room 10)

Birth of Venus (Room 10)

Perhaps the Uffizi's most famous work, Botticelli's masterpiece depicts the emergence of Venus from the sea into sensuous adulthood.

Adoration of the Magi (Room 15)

Adoration of the Magi (Room 15)

This unfinished piece by Leonardo da Vinci may not be his best, but it helps unravel the great artist's method. It's certainly one of the most interesting!

Madonna of the Harpies (Room 26)

Madonna of the Harpies (Room 26)

Andrea del Sarto is one of the High Renaissance's unsung heroes. Room 26 lets you compare his bold, imposing works to those of his more famous contemporary, Raphael.

Bacchus (First floor, Room 4)

Bacchus (First floor, Room 4)

Caravaggio's use of shadow was unrivalled in his time. In one of his less dramatic works, however, he beautifully captures flawed humanity in his portrayal of the Roman God of wine.

Julia was very knowledgeable. Great highlights

Julia has studied renaissance art and it shows. She walked us through the gallery in a timeline to show how art had changed. Julia also gave us a very good overview of the Medici family and their art legacy. 2 hours just touched the surface but was a great introduction to the 100,000 pieces of art. Buying a skip the line tour saves a lot of time

Amazing gallery with lots of beautiful famous artworks.

So much gorgeous art, and the layout makes it really easy to see everything. Great views of the city and the river from the windows in the corridor too. Start at the top floor and make your way to the one below. The cafe on the rooftop is great too, you can stand inside if you're in a hurry or sit outside in the lovely terrace.

Excellent and detailed description of the artwork!

This was an interesting and casual way to view a lot of the artwork in the Uffizzi Gallery ~ which is an overwhelming Museum! It was great to be able to go at one’s own pace in viewing the many stunning works of such important artists.
