What to look for at the Tower of London

Few buildings have played a more pivotal role in London's history than its Tower. Boasting a millenium's worth of treacherous tales and host to the exquisite Crown Jewels, it survives as one of the UK's most popular tourist attractions. Keep an eye out for these...

Fun fact: If the ravens ever leave the Tower then it'll fall down! OK, perhaps "fact" isn't the word, but these birds are so important that they even have a designated guard!

The Tower of London guards are commonly known as Beefeaters, and they're more guides than guards these days. Call them Yeoman Warders instead for preferential treatment!

Crown Jewels

The Jewel House boasts the monarchy's most exquisite treasures, including the Imperial Crown. Admission is included with your Tower of London ticket.

Execution site

Despite the Tower's grisly reputation, there were relatively few executions. Most of the heads rolled on Tower Hill to the north, where the old scaffold site is commemorated.

OK, this is a tough one, but some famous apparitions include Anne Boleyn and Henry VI! Sightings have dwindled recently, leading to the belief that ghosts don't like tourists...

Our insider tips

How to get there?

Near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London's nearest Tube station is Tower Hill on the District and Circle lines. It can also be reached by taking the DLR to Tower Gateway.

How long to visit?

There are 12 acres and a lot to see within the walls of the Tower of London. History buffs could easily spend a full day there! Some areas, such as the chapel, can't be accessed any other way!

What people are saying about Tower of London

Pure, pleasure, an education, perfect signage, and organization. Great

Canadian, 85 years old, woman. Walked 6.32 miles - according to my FitBit; probably climbed 1000 steps; read every information label; learned much history of England in the nicest possible way. An observation not a moan! A Canadian would never, ever find one’s self in such a crowd, queued for 50 minutes to see the jewels, queued for everything we wanted to see. People were polite, helpful, joyful, and pleasant to be with.

Westminster to Greenwich by the Thames Barrier: River Cruise Reviewed by a GetYourGuide customer, 07/16/2018

Very easy booking website and great service throughout.

The five of us had a great day out. All the information and the organisation worked perfectly. I so enjoyed the humourous live commentary on the way down to the barrier. Keep it up. On the way back, the tape was ok but just not as great.

Great ironic and humorous narrative of trip by a real Londoner.

Three hour round trip to Thames barrier at steady pace so you can take in the history of the Thames and the architecture of our stunning capital City. An excellent guide. Probably not a professional but all the more interesting for it with a passionate local knowledge and righteous irritation about the corrupt development of our Thameside. Highly recommended for British visitors and locals. You will learn something.

So much history to take in, wonderful and helpful employees!

All employees were kind, helpful and made the entire experience quite interesting! Props to the Yeoman Warders who give a great and fun guide. The facilities are in perfect condition and if you love history as much as I do...there’s a lot to take in and see. Excellent exhibition indeed!
