  • Enjoy a Chanko HotPot prepared by the wrestlers, or choose lunch from one of 11 restaurants
Full description
Step into the ring with real sumo wrestlers and choose from various lunch options. Former professional wrestlers will discuss the long tradition of sumo and show off some basic moves. Then it’s time to step into the ring to practice and take photos with the pros. On Mondays, this activity will take place in Asakusa, on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Ryogoku. The lunch on Mondays and Thursdays will be a Chanko HotPot, prepared by the wrestlers themselves. This is a traditional dish, that is supposed to give a lot of stamina.

On Tuesdays, after the demonstration, choose from sushi, sashimi, tempura, okonomiyaki and other traditional Japanese favorites at one of 11 restaurants in Ryogoku Edo Noren, an attraction in historic Ryogoku Station that recreates the traditional atmosphere of an Edo-era shopping street. Simply take a coupon from your guide after the sumo demonstration and head off on your own to your chosen eatery, or opt for a small gift if you’re not hungry.

Definitely one of the highlights during our trip to Japan. Our experience was rather unique, in that because of coronavirus, my husband and I were the only guests, but very kindly they did it all anyway, just for us. The location for this activity was not as pictured (the photograph suggests a traditional arena; whereas this was an upstairs room among shops and restaurants with a little kitchen attached) which may make guests wonder at first whether they’re in the right place on arrival. However the map provided helps and there is a board outside advertising the sumo experience. The host spoke good English and interpreted for the sumos, the demonstration was very engaging and done with lots of humour. We then got to join in! The food was also very nice. We felt very welcome, it was excellent value for money and I’m so glad we went.
