Highlights
  • A scenic tour of the tallest volcano in Europe, Mt. Etna
  • The opportunity to trek the Silvestri's craters
  • Optional ascent to the main crater area
Full description
This is a 1-day excursion by bus from Taormina to Mount Etna. The highest volcano in Europe (10,922 feet high), its smoking peak can be seen throughout Sicily with seismic activity constantly changing its shape. There are 4 distinct craters at the summit area and more than 300 vents on the flanks, ranging in size from small holes to large craters. You'll be picked up from Taormina at 08:30 AM from where you'll be driven to the Etna refuge. From here, you'll be able to trek around the the Silvestri’s Craters at 1.900 meters. You then have the option (at extra cost) to head to the top of the volcano by funicular and a 4x4-wheel drive. Eruptions at the summit are extremely spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. An eruption in 1669 lasted 122 days and destroyed several towns. Since then, there have been countless summit eruptions and at least 60 flank eruptions, the last one in 2008. At 04:00 PM, you'll be returned you to Taormina. It's a guarantee that you'll never experience a similar volcano in the whole of Europe.

The tour was really very exciting and impressed me, especially since there was a temperature difference of about 20 degrees from the valley to the Etna (at 3000 m altitude). A great experience of the power of nature. The guide was not so linguistically trained, so I didn't understand a lot. I lacked information about the Etna itself. This is also not a hiking tour, you can be transported comfortably by cable car or bus.

Great tour. We have booked the cable car and Unimo extension.

Great tour, cable car and Unimog extension booked. With these extensions it is not cheap, but firstly it is worth every penny and if you consider that the cable car is regularly damaged by lava flows, you should not compare the costs with cable car tariffs in the Alps. The Unimog transport from the mountain station up to 3000m is also extremely valuable because you don't have to trudge across these scree fields, where you have to slide back half a step for each step. Visiting the craters at 3000m above, and stomping around there is already strenuous enough at altitude - you finally come from sea level and are not acclimatized. The tour is super interesting, also for children.

The lava was still warm!

It was great to drive up across the different vegetation zones. Above was a still warm lava flow from an eruption 4 days earlier. That was great, of course. You should choose a sunny day because you have a great view from all sides. At the top of the cable car station there are many restaurants with delicious snacks.
