Highlights
  • Hike around the perimeters of extinct craters through ancient woods and along lava paths
  • Visit the volcanic underground and discover one of Etna's amazing lava caves
  • Enjoy a typical snack of Sicily in a local café
Full description
Following pick-up at a pre-arranged pick-up point, depart Taormina at about 08:30 and journey to the foothills of Mt. Etna. Travel in a small group of no more than 8 people for a more intimate and personalized experience. You will be accompanied by a guide trained in volcanology, biology or geology for your convenience.

Upon arrival at the active volcano, hike for approximately 1.5 hours around the perimeters of some of its extinct craters. Walk through ancient woods and along paths covered with lava about 2,000 meters above sea level. Get a better appreciation of this emblem of Sicily and its surrounding landscape from a different perspective. Learn about the fascinating volcanic phenomenon, before heading underground to explore one of the lava caves.

Then, head to a local café for a typical savory snack of a sandwich, wine, a dessert and a tasting of almond wine, which is a typical Sicilian sweet wine. Return to your hotel at around 14:30 at the end of the tour services.

Very adaptive to situations; our original trek was rescheduled for us because of a snow storm that hit Etna on the day of the trip - and from Catania instead of Taormina as it was our last day in the latter. The guide was very friendly and very knowledgeable, and despite the ice and snow that remained after the storm and very low visibility in general, it was an incredible experience and we learned a lot.

Enjoyable and not overly tiring! If you're looking for a trip to Etna that does not take the entire day and not drain you, this is the one for you. You dont go all the way to the top but you do get to trek up some good hill spots with amazing breathtaking views of the top and of the coastline. This tour gives you great tour guides -they all seem to have genuine fun and can equip you with very thorough geological knowledge (very impressive). The tour finishes with a basic sandwich lunch (very basic) but the cake and wine is simply delicious and makes up for it.

Great trip that would have been tricky to organise without the tour

We booked this trip as we wanted a nice easy way to see Mount Etna and get some info from a specialist. We were really happy with the trip, our guide Guiseppi was amazing! Really informative and positive, he seemed really happy to be our guide and genuinely interested in the subject. We did a lovely trek and saw lots of variation in landscape. And it was all topped off with lots of wine and delicious food. Plus, the boot hire was great as we hadn't come prepared for a hike. Very comfy shoes! Would definitely recommend this tour.
