The 7 best things to do in Tangier

A Moroccan port town in the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is a character-filled place to spend a few days. Once a playground of hippies and hustlers, the destination has completely cleaned up its act, and now offers sightseeing and world-class tourism alongside excellent amenities.

American Legation

Located inside the Medina, the American Legation was the first US-owned property outside the United States. A museum of sorts, it commemorates the US/Moroccan relationship.

This grand former home of media tycoon Malcolm Forbes was featured in Bond movie "The Living Daylights". It's now a VIP residence for state guests, but worth a look from outside.

This attraction is outside of the Medina, and is a great place to learn about Moroccan art, interiors, furniture, and history. Closed on Tuesday. Entry is 10 dirham.

Planning Your Tangier Visit

Experience the Souks

There are a number of souks in Tangier, where you can buy leather goods, furniture, clothing, and ornamental objects for excellent value, as long as you're happy to barter! Start lower than you intend to pay, and laugh off a vendor's original price--tourists will always be charged a huge markup. But if you're brave, hold your nerve and bring change, you'll be amazed what you can buy for 10 dirham!

Daytripping

As a port town, Tangier is a popular day trip or excursion destination from Cadiz, Gibraltar, or mainland Spain. Check ferry times and destinations before you travel.

What to wear

Morocco is a Muslim country, so it is unusual to see women in short skirts or revealing clothing. To avoid glances or comments--cover shoulders, knees, and your chest in public.

What people are saying about Tangier

I thought it was a great day trip and well worth it!

My wife & I really enjoyed this day tour. It was fun & enlightening! We saw lots of not so great reviews so were skeptical but honestly I don't know what people expect for the amount of money paid & the time it takes to get there & back...all in all we thought it was exceptionally well run & organized. If you are looking for free time to shop & wander the city on your own this is not the tour for you - it is a fast paced organized tour with no time to spend exploring on your own. TIP: take eros for the street hawkers...they are VERY persistent but if you know this going in & keep a good attitude its over soon enough and some of them have pretty cool stuff plus it gets cheaper the closer you get to leaving...My only negative comment would be when we got back to Spain we had to wait quite awhile at the port for our bus to take us back because the bus driver had driven to many hours earlier & we had to wait out his mandatory rest period - they had cold beer so it was all good!

An epic fun-filled and informative day out in Africa!

A very well organised and good value trip with, in our case, an excellent english-speaking guide full of stories and character. Lots to see with the itinerary varied to suit the weather if too hot. A long day from Seville, but worth the effort for a special day out. A fair bit of walking in Tangier itself but several stop opportunities and an excellent loch with traditional fare.

A whirlwind trip with an amazing local guide.

Our guide in Tangier was outstanding! He was so helpful in terms of where to buy certain souvenirs and keeping us safe in certain areas. Lunch was very authentic, and we visited a variety of locations across the city. Overall, a great trip!

Overall good and worthwhile experience in one day.

Julia Tour Operators, and their guides did a good job to cover as much as they could in one day; wish had more things to see in Tangier, as a lot of time was consumed in travelling.

excellent driver very safe and carried our bags would highly recommend

Driver was there to meet us as we exited the terminal carried our suitcases to a people carrier very comfortable vehicle. Driver was very good negotiating rush hour Marrakech madness and we felt very safe. He was considerate and we were very happy with his driving.
