Full description
Your day will begin in one of the most famous squares in the world, the vast and spectacular Palace Square. Home to the azure and white-tinged Winter Palace and the stunning pink pastel colored Hermitage (the world’s 2nd largest art museum), the scale and the beauty of this area will really take your breath away. You will then amble your way through Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s main thoroughfare. There are more cultural gems here than you can shake a stick at. Highlights include the perfectly pink Stroganov Palace, the neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, and the elaborate Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood. Your guide will fill you in with all the need to know history of the area.

Stop for a traditional Russian lunch in one of the dozens of restaurants that line the avenue. Expect bliny, borscht and plenty of pickles. Learn more about the lives of locals in St. Petersburg and find out why it is unlucky to walk on the left side of the road. After a meal, continue your St. Petersburg discovery by visiting its most beautiful and interesting metro stations. To give you the full picture of the city, you’ll then go to an old local market where you'll learn all about local food and snacks and how locals go about their daily shopping. After the market discovery, your tour comes to an end as you can then return to your ship full of memorable moments from the charming city.

Public transport in big cities is often a rather dull affair but riding the metro in St. Petersburg is, rather unusually, one of the city’s most unmissable attractions. This will be your next stop and you will feel as though you have stepped into a palace, as the architecture is so grand. Visit the Vitebsky Railway Station, the first of its kind in the old Russian empire and inspired by Gustav Eiffel’s famous tower in Paris. After you have taken enough pictures to fill the walls of a Tsarist pleasure palace, your local guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have and take you back to the boat.
