Next, take a moment to straddle Freedom Bridge, famously used for exchanging prisoners of war between the two states. Then, visit Ganghwa Peace Observatory where you can get close to North Korea and see the country’s farmlands.

I went with a friend of mine and we were informed from the outset that access to the JSA could not be guaranteed due to an outbreak of swine flu in recent months. The tour company sent an email the day before the tour itself confirming that these circumstances had not changed since our booking, and this was of course no fault of theirs. In spite of the JSA being the thing I was most hoping to see, our day wasn't dampened; my friend and I gained a lot from this tour, definitely felt our money's worth. The tour guide was lovely, very informative and, frankly, very patient with an ignorant and cynical family that had also booked for that day. A must for history buffs, or anyone with a mild sense of curiosity. The tour lasts a few hours but the time whizzes by, and I'd recommend the lunch offer.

The JSA was closed but I had been emailed and called to ensure I understood. So the tour was different, but it was still interesting and it was well organised with everything running on time. Plenty of time to take photos but I didn’t feel like we were hanging around. Fascinating history and I will be back to do the JSA next time.

Fascinating trip

Initially the JSA part of this trip was cancelled, and I had considered cancelling the whole trip, I am glad I didn't as we were actually able to visit the JSA. The trip was long, but informative, fun and insightful, we got to see all of the 'highlights' of the DMZ and JSA, our guide was fun, friendly and knowledgeable Was definitely a high point on my trip to Seoul
