Konstantina met me on time and we drove to the Profit Ilias lookout point, just below the summit with its monastery. The sun seemed to take forever to rise and when it did it was pretty hazy. We took some photos there and then towards Pyrgos and Oia. We drove into Pyrgos for coffee and milk pie (I think that's what they were called - very lightly sweetened custard centre with flakey pastry outer) and chatted in one of the squares there before our final stop. This stop was just next to the beach and had some gorgeous shapes carved by the wind into the soft pumice and now used by nesting birds. The light was still surreal, almost blending the sea and the sky into one. I think because we were chatting so much the tour lasted an hour longer than intended but it was a very enjoyable time. Obviously when I got back to the hotel the photos I had created in my head were not matched by what I'd actually taken but any fault was mine.
I booked this experience to enhance our photography skills and tour parts of Santorini that otherwise we may not see. My wife was uncertain regarding the photography part of the excursion. However, Judy made her very comfortable from the initial introductions. Judy is an experienced professional photographer and that came across immediately. My wife was using her iPhone and I was using a Sony RX100. Judy was able to explain exposure compensation, ISO, histograms, Aperture vs Shutter vs Manual and how best to use all of these to get the best photos given the lighting conditions. She was able to explain these photography basics in a very simple way and have us understand and implement them within the first hour. The rest of our tour was taking different shots and having Judy review them pointing out how they could be improved. We were also able to visit certain areas of Santorini that most tourists never get to see.
I'm not one to normally go out of my way to write a review but I just thoroughly enjoyed this tour with Lefteris as our driver/guide, he and the tour were both fantastic! From the moment he picked us up we felt like we were just hanging out with a friend, a very lucky friend that happens to live in Santorini of course! We felt like we got a great overview of the entire island without missing any of the highlights and Lefteris gave us lots of invaluable insider tips and insights that we were able to use during the rest of our stay, which was incredibly helpful and really makes taking his tour extremely worthwhile and a great value. We truly felt like locals during our entire stay because we were so well informed by Lefteris, and the advice and suggestions he offered us were totally spot on. We can’t recommend taking a tour with Blue Shades of Greece highly enough, so be like a local and book this tour!
Judy was AMAZING!!! Not only does she have 30 years of photography experience, but she was so friendly and easy to learn from! She showed my boyfriend and I how to use a brand new camera and also how to shoot better photos in on our phones as well. It was incredible how much we learned in only 5 hours and how much better our photos were from the start of our session to the end. I think both beginners and experienced photographers can learn a great deal from her! Highly recommend!!
I signed up for this tour, with the intention to take great photos, not commonly found on the standard tourist path. I was not disappointed. We caught the sunrise, visited two towns seeing classic local architecture, and did some portrait photography as well. The timing was good, since I was back from the tour by 10:30am.
