This 'Lustschloss' (pleasure palace) was where Austria's archbishops came to unwind in the summer months. The Hellbrunn Palace is most famous for its fountains and cheeky water games.

Nothing average about this zoo! Lush animal habitats spread out over floodplains and rocky hillsides, making for such unusal sights as zebras grazing in a green meadow.

Salzburg Cathedral

Planning Your Salzburg Visit

How many days to spend in Salzburg?

With a population of under 150,000, Salzburg is a relatively small town. You'd be able to see most of the city's highlights in a day if you're hustling. But take it easy, and leave enough time to get your strudel on! Three days is recommended, especially if you plan to take a daytrip to Hellbrunn Palace or elsewhere.

Where to stay?

Salzburg is brimming with great hotels and top notch hostels, so take your pick! Do yourself a favor and find a cozy spot on either side of the river, close to the city center.

What people are saying about Salzburg

Succinct way of seeing the highlights of Salzburg in one hour

We were hosted by Leo, who drove us, a total of 8 passengers, around to tell and show us the highlights of Salzburg. It was a good choice as it was raining on and off on the day of the tour and would be ideal for those who do not want to do a walking tour in the rain. The icing on the cake for me was being driven to see Leopoldskron Palace across from the lake. Although the weather was not great, what a brilliant view!! The weather didn't take anything away from it and it was worth seeing, if only for 5 mins. It was actually the attraction I was most interested in seeing, so I am pleased that I chose this tour as I did not want to make my own way there or spend hours on a tour just to get there. The fortress you can see from a distance as it sits high above the town. Meeting point was very easy to find.

Beautiful venue, wonderful music, a real treat!

Truly wonderful evening, with a couple small issues. Firstly, the hall was extremely warm; outside temps were in the high 80's. And secondly, our table was not attended to as well as the other tables, it seemed. One of our party did not get his first course until we asked though the rest of us had already been served. Still, the evening was amazing and I would recommend it. The food was delicious, but the music was the star of the evening! Both of the singers were so incredible and the musicians were excellent! I appreciated them even more so performing in those heavy costumes in the heat. The Mozart Concert and Dinner was the perfect end to our wonderful stay in Salzburg!!

Fantastic scenery with intelligible guidance~

Everything was great. Even in the drizzling weather, the scenery was quite enjoyable. The guidance was fastidious and easy to be understood even to a foreigner. I enjoyed it very much. One thing I would like to do but couldn't was to visit the salt mine, which alone took 1.5 hours. Driving to Hallstatt took about 3 h back and forth and the total tour was 5.5 h. Including the salt mine, it will take at least 7.5 h, which is perhaps too long for a day tour. In any event, I recommend it.

Half-Day Tour to Hallstatt from Salzburg Reviewed by Michael, 07/09/2019

Please save the town of Hallstatt. I’m sorry but your killing it!

Great Driver. Guide Wolfgang very friendly and informative. Told us about area on way to and back from destination. Was a great way for us to see lakes area. I did not wish to rent car. Well organized at web site and booth. Wolfgang had the entire group following his wishes. We went up to Mountain View and had plenty of time for lunch and picture taking. Thank You for great day.

Wonderful, up-close Salzburg experience with guide Michaela Muhr..

Loved the old-city walking tour on the way to get our bikes, including stops at Confiserie Josef Holzermayr's to taste the famed Mozartkugler (chocolate and marzipan filled candy), the Mirabelle Gardens, and many historical places including the locations of many Sound of Music scenes throughout the surrounding Salzburg countryside. A perfect way to see the city!
