Benefit from pick-up at your hotel in downtown Salta, and then venture out to the beautiful landscapes of Jujuy Province. Learn about the life of the inhabitants of this large and rugged region of Puna.

Journey through the town of Campo Quijano, parallel to the famous “Tren a las Nubes” ("Train to the Clouds") railway line. Admire all the stations, bridges, tunnels and viaducts it passes, including the gorge of the Quebrada del Toro. Stop to take photos of its staggering views or just appreciate its beauty.

Upon arrival at the small town of Santa Rosa de Tastil, visit the museum and see the remains of a settlement built by the Atacameño people who thrived during the 15th century at the ruins of Tastil. Then, head through the high mountain pass of the Abra Blanca and climb to a maximum altitude of 4,080 meters (13,385 feet) above sea level. Contemplate the impressive snow-covered peaks of Mount Acay.

Make your way into the Puna de Atacama for unrivalled views of the plateau's lunar landscape. Reach the small town of San Antonio de los Cobres and break for lunch (own expense) before driving along Route 40 to keep an eye out for wildlife such as vicuñas, llamas, zuris, foxes and condors. Get a breathtaking view of the salt desert of the Salinas Grandes, and go to the Cerro de los Siete Colores ("Hill of 7 Colors") in Purmamarca. Travel along the hairpin bends of the Cuesta del Lipan, reaching an altitude of 4,170 meters (13,680 feet) above sea level.

Visit the main square and artisan market of Purmamarca before returning to Salta to get dropped off at your hotel.

It is definitely a very long day, the road can be really bumpy and it is really tiring. Most of all remember that this tour takes you really high up, maximum of 4000 meter and as a result most of the participants sleep in the bus. A lot of driving, and although the spots are really amazing, I would not do it again in one day. You depart before 7am and get back after 9pm. Water and drinks are really needed, sickness transport medication can come handy with the curvy mountain roads, and sun protection highly recommended. The bus is - in my opinion - not really adequate for these bumpy not concrete roads and you may lack of comfort. Definitely not indicated if you have any neck or back injuries.

The tour was generally good, the landscapes are wonderful and the small villages visited are interesting as well. There’s a lot of driving on gravel roads (though through an area with lots of wildlife), the time in Salinas Grandes seemed a bit too long, while in Purmamarca it was too short, and there wasn’t a chance to really see the colourful hill. It would have been nice to explore the towns in the area s as bit more. The guide Cecilia was very nice, but there was a feeling that her stories in Spanish were much more expressive and extensive than in English.

Excellent guide. Beautiful route. Well planned photo stops. Old not too comfortable Sprinter van was mostly OK, but ride on unpaved Road for one hour was rough. Lunch at recommended restaurant was awful with zero sanitation. To be fair, there probably were no better options at this primitive location. Salt flats interesting stop. Very long day.
