Know before you go

  • St. Peter's is closed during the following times: Wednesdays: 8:00 AM -12:00 PM, December 24 and 31.
  • During these times the tour will visit other parts of the museums.
  • The Vatican can get very crowded all year round. June, July and August are particularly busy as they are high-season months.
  • All visitors must pass through airport-style security. During high season the wait at security may be up to 30 minutes.
  • On rare occasions, St. Peter's Basilica closes without notice. In this case, the tour will include a 3-hour visit to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel instead of St. Peter's. The tour operator will not offer refunds.

Vatican Museum and the galleries were full of art, which you have seen in the books and pictures before. It was really exciting to see them in real. The Sistine Chapel was so amazing. It must have been a real pain to draw all those colourful pictures to the walls and ceiling. Still, I admired most the Gallery of maps, as there were the entirety of the Italian peninsula in large-scale frescoes, each depicting a region. They were so accurate! St. Peter's Basilica was of course overwhelming and that's why it felt me empty. It just felt like a huge museum, not a wholy place.

Great experience overall. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable and provided context to many of the works of art on display throughout the tour. My only criticism was that we only got to see some of the artwork on display in the Vatican Museum, missing notable works by Raphael. Would still recommend it.
