Full description
This tour is a combination of the "Vatican Museum Tour" in the morning and the "Christian Rome Tour" in the afternoon. The tours include all major sightseeing spots associated to the past and present of the Catholic church in Rome, such as St.Peter's church, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museums, the Basilica St. John Lateran and the Appian Way, including a visit to the old Christian catacombs. You will have lunch in a traditional Italian restaurant in between the two tours.

The morning tour starts with a Vatican tour, which is a highlight of every stay in Rome. Booking a ticket ahead ensures that you jump the queue and don't have to wait in long visitor lines (up to 3 hours), but instead you go straight into the Vatican Museums & the Sistine Chapel and enjoy seeing Michelangelo's famous frescos.
You will be able to see some of the most important Roman sights, before getting to the Vatican. These include the Piazza della Repubblica, the ancient Aurelian Walls, the famous Villa Borghese gardens and the northern gate of Rome leading into Piazza del Popolo.

Once you arrive at the Vatican, the tour guide will lead you into the Vatican. You will have the chance to see the beautiful spiral stairway (make sure to bring your camera!), the impressive Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Geographical Maps. Finally, you will arrive at the famous Sistine Chapel with its famous fresco of the Last Judgment by Michelangelo.

You will then be brought to a restaurant, where you can enjoy a good Italian meal and take a break before your guide will head off with you to start the second part of the program.

In the afternoon, you will get to see the most important sacred Christian sites in Rome. Among others, the tour stops at the well-known Basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and Saint John in Lateran. Later on, you will travel along the ancient Appian Way and see Rome's famous Catacombs.

The tour lasts in total 3 hours and begins with a stop at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill. The guide will show you some of the treasures this impressive church has on the inside! Next, you will get to see the Holy Staircase and go inside the Basilica of St John in Lateran, also known as the cathedral of Rome.

The tour then proceeds along the ancient Appian Way, passing the Chapel of Domine Quo Vadis before arriving at the Catacombs. These historic underground cemeteries are early marks of Christianity in Rome and document the hiding places of the then oppressed Christian minority. A visit will be made to either the Catacombs of San Callisto, Santa Domitilla or San Sebastiano, depending on seasonal conditions. The tour ends with a spectacular view of the Baths of Emperor Caracalla.

The tour ends at this point and your guide will either leave you to discover the sights further on your own, or direct you to your next point of interest.
