Rome in a day: 5 sights to make your day trip perfect

Don't expect to see all of Rome in a day. All the same, whether you're on a cruise stop or just passing through on a tour of Italy, here's a varied sampling platter of Rome's highlights!

Borghese Park

Borghese Park

Sunny day? Be sure to meander around the Galleria Borghese's picturesque park and gardens. If you've got time, pop inside the gorgeous villa for a who's who of Renaissance art.

Roman Forum

Roman Forum

This world-renowned archeological site is the closest you'll come to a glimpse at city life in Ancient Rome. Even better, it's right by the Colosseum and Palatine Hill too!

Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain

A day tour won't allow enough time to savor life at all Rome's piazzas, but make the most of it by seeing this cultural emblem - celebrated in numerous films - at Trevi Square.

Sistine Chapel

Sistine Chapel

Seeing Michelangelo's Renaissance-defining ceiling might be a bit of stretch at peak season. Be sure to fit it in by pre-booking skip-the-line tickets to the Vatican museums!

Campo de' Fiori

If you're early enough, mingle with the locals at Campo de' Fiori, one of Rome's favorite markets. If the stalls are already packed up, fret not! Stick around to enjoy the vibrant café culture.

Planning Your Visit

How to get there from Civitavecchia cruise port?

Civitavecchia is the main cruise port for excursions to Rome. The easiest way to reach the city center is by pre-booking a private or shared transfer, or by taking a taxi. However, there are also two or three trains per hour to Roma Termini (Rome's main station). It costs about €5 each way, but you could save money with the BIRG ticket (day pass), which will get you there and back, as well as covering buses, trams, and the metro for the entire day.

How to get around Rome?

Since you're not there for long, you'll probably want to rely on taxis. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done in Rome, where hailing down a cab in the tourist-heavy areas is nearly impossible. Utilize the metro wherever possible, as buses and trams can also be slowed by traffic. There are two metro lines: Line A (orange) runs between the northwest and southeast, and Line B (blue) runs north to south, with a third line due to open in 2016.

What people are saying about Rome

A fantastic experience that’s well worth the time away from Rome!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Our guide, Robert was FANTASTIC! The man deserves a promotion. He was both incredibly animated and still very thorough when giving his knowledge on the history of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Robert is hands down, an expert archeologists/geologist who truly loves what he does. Taking a full day to leave the hustle and bustle of Rome was just what we needed. The skip-the-line feature didn’t feel like a gimmick like other attractions had made us feel in Rome because you’re with your guide and local guides through the entire process. The day was scheduled to a “T” and we felt we had just enough time to see everything we needed to see. Lunch was included which was perfect for the occasion- traditional Neapolitan pizza! Robert even offered us a great history lesson on the pizza which helped us make the definitive answer- “which pizza should I have?” We couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Fantabulous tour experience by Robert M. from CityWonders

The tour experience is likened to a delizioso tagliolini in aglio olio. The lovely sights are like main ingredients; olive oil, garlic & red pepper flakes coming together in a large pan and Robert is the chef! He is the one that strings all the important pieces together to make this an unforgettable experience for us. Robert is very knowledgeable with all the historical cultures of not only Pompeii but also of Italy. He shared many interesting legends and stories that makes the whole journey so much fun and enjoyable. Robert is also super caring towards everyone in making sure that we’re feeling comfortable and doing alright. His subliminal dark humour is already worth the ticket price for the tour, let alone all the invaluable insights and informations. i would give a 3 thumbs up if i can but last i checked, i have only 2 thumbs just like everyone else...so it’s a 2 thumbs up from me and 2 thumbs up from my wife!

Our guide , Andy, went above and beyond our expectations!

I highly recommend this tour. We had a fantastic time and learned so much more than we expected about all of Tuscany ! Our only disappointment was not enough time in Montepulciano . There was much time in other areas and zero time for photos or possible wine purchase in Montepulciano which was the most beautiful and well known part of the tour. I would have hoped for a little more time there . If I were to have the opportunity to do it again I would look for a half day tour to the Montepulciano winery on its own . Absolutely stunning and deserves more attention and appreciation.

you must see Pompei when you visit Italy

The whole tour was very good organized with the bus and the guide on the bus.....on site we had some other guide who gave us lots of information about Pompei…..We got some drinks before and after the guiding tour in Pompei…. Lunch was included and very good with wine and even a tasteful dessert... Driver of bus was very experienced and brought us safely towards Napels.... The city of Naples is not so special in my opinion.....we saw lots of things with the open hop and off bus, but not so special.....Never the less Pompei was great…..

Excellent tour with Giusseppe, the best tour guide ever!

It was an excellent tour guided by Giuseppe, he not only made it funny and enjoyable, but added plenty of historical, artistic and architectural details. Both places are breathtaking and a must see for people who dont like to make the average Joe tour. Additionally, the lunch time at Tivoli was very nice, regrettably there is short time to sightsee this beautiful place. I must say that I don't like guided tours, but this was really amazing, in content and with the best tour guide ever, Giuseppe!
