Planning Your Rio de Janeiro Visit

How long should I stay in Rio de Janeiro?

Seven action-packed days is a good start!

How walkable is Rio de Janeiro?

Rio offers many public transit options, including bus and metro. Note that air-conditioned buses cost a little more than non-air-conditioned buses, so if you are traveling a long distance around the city and you're not used to hot weather, it may be worth considering shelling out a bit more. It's quite a hilly city, so walking can sometimes be akin to hiking - make sure you are wearing good shoes.

When should I visit Rio de Janeiro?

All year round - the temperature does not vary too much.

Anything else I should know?

It is recommended to take a taxi in Rio de Janeiro at night, rather than walking or using the public transport. Do not flash your cash or valuables around, always be on your guard when withdrawing cash at an ATM. If venturing into areas outside the more touristic ones, better not do it unaccompanied.

What people are saying about Rio de Janeiro

felt a bit rushed, not much time to explore sightings

itinerary looks good, but most places (except sambodromo and maracana) were crowded. so not enough time to walk around and see everything. especially on Christ, were so many people, terrible. guide gave us only 30 min, had to go up the stairs, make ur way through hundreds of people trying take selfie, photos etc, and try to have a look around, beautiful panoramic views, and then walk back down. too rushed! there was option for elevator but line for it was going to take 30 min anyways. sugaloaf was good. a bit disappointed about maracana, got to see only main entrance with statue of the team capitain and then drive around in the van, basically didnt see anything. i was expecting we will be able go inside and see ourselves how massive it is inside, but didnt happen. cathedral was good. sambodromo interesting to see, lunch was great at traditional churascaria, choice of food/meat was great. selaron steps again too crowded and didnt had enought time to go all the way up the stairs to see

Excellent guided hike with outstanding views

This was a superbly well organised hike. Communication was excellent about pick-ups, drop-offs, times, itinerary etc. Lead by Felipe and Alex (two enthusiastic guides), the hike was fun and they gave interesting points about the diverse wildlife and forestry habitat as we walked. There was a wide variety of trees, plants and landscape features to see, including waterfalls and a cave with the highlight being a view from the top of the surrounding west side of Rio de Janeiro. Some parts of the climb were fairly strenuous as there were stretches were the gradient was steep and it required careful footing. But nevertheless every part of the walk felt safe. It was great having the opportunity to take a lesser traversed trail past the walls of old coffee farms. A remarkable unforgettable day in the company of a fun welcoming pair of guides and group. I highly recommend it, if you wish to see the landscape around Rio and take in some breathtaking views.

Very well organised with a great enthusiastic and helpful guide

This was a really excellent day out. It was so well organised with great communication on meeting times and schedule. Plus it never felt rushed. Chi Chi was such a entertaining fun guide. Her enthusiasm and 'ooh la la' attitude was infectious and she gave some interesting background and history on the places we visited from the Petropolis palace to the former casino. Petropolis palace is an elegant residence set within a lovely old town, with all the old architecture it's a nice contrast to the modern bustling Rio. We had a buffet meal and it offered great choice of items to select and great value. We were given the option to explore the shops or go to the Beer factory. I chose the latter and it was a nice relaxing end to the day, with a few tastings included. Not forgetting a fabulous group of friendly people to spend the day with.
