Full description
On the first day you’ll encounter lush farmlands, powerful volcanos, glaciers, and the amazing Skógafoss waterfall before moving on to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a truly unique natural phenomenon favored by photographers and filmmakers the world over for its surreal and ever-changing beauty. When you arrive, you may feel as you’ve been dropped off on a set of a movie. That may be because the lagoon has been featured in several of them–Lara Croft and James Bond, both found themselves in risky situations by Jökulsárlón.

This lagoon is the result of a warming climate. Sea water flows into the lagoon at a high tide as huge blocks of ice break off the glacier, forming one of Iceland’s most iconic wonders of nature. Jökulsárlón started to form in 1934 when Vatnajökull glacier started to retreat. Sixty years ago, the lagoon was approximately 4,5 square km but today it’s about 25 and getting even larger, as 500 square-m of ice are breaking off the glacier every year. It also recently became Iceland’s deepest lake, at 250-m. First and foremost, Jökulsárlón is an otherworldly sight that you’ll never forget. There will be plenty of time to explore and take photographs before heading back to the bus to get to Gerði Country Hotel, your final destination of the night.

Located in the heart of Vatnajökull Region, close to the sea and right beneath majestic mountains is Gerði Country Hotel, where you’ll rest up for the night and dinner is available for purchase. The second day starts with a breakfast in Hotel Gerði’s lovely restaurant where you will relax enjoy the amazing surroundings before going on a short tour with a local guide to an area called Þröng near the edge of the glacier. This tour gives you the chance to see a beautiful but lesser traveled place, with striking contrasts in the landscape.

On the way back to Reykjavík you stop by Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of the most iconic images of the South Coast. You will probably want to walk up the footpath to get the completely unique perspective of standing behind a waterfall. If that is the case, bring rain gear with you, because it’s going to get you wet. The tour returns to Reykjavik around 10pm on day 2.
