We booked the tour and the day before were told that we would not be getting the glass roofed bus which we had been looking forward to and we were disappointed about but still wanted to go to the Milford Sound. In the morning the bus was a little delayed but our initial concerns were put to rest by the pleasant and professional demeanour of Carl our coach driver. He was funny and knowledgeable about the destinations and was very apologetic about the bus. All in all we had a great journey over to the boat. The boat itself was clean and the staff very helpful. Again they were very knowledgeable about the area and we saw wildlife and took a dip under a waterfall. On the way over Carl had mentioned about the option of paying to fly back and when we saw how nice the day was we took it. Carl arranged this for us while we were on the cruise and when we came back made sure we were introduced to our pilot. In some ways we were sad we didn't drive back but the extra cost of flying was worth it.

It is a long day and users must be prepared for that (some 600kms/400 miles round trip). However, the scenery all the way there and back is superb reaching an amazing climax at Milford Sound. Kipling called it one of the wonders of the natural world and I would not challenge that for a moment. 'Grandeur' is a barely adequate word.

I particularly enjoyed the bus tour to Milford Sound. The scenery was breathtaking and indescribable. The mountains, waterfalls, valleys, lakes, rivers and stream all shaping the environment in their own gigantic way. We also experienced the forces of nature as we were the first tourists to be allowed to drive to Milford after the destructive rains of early February. The power of water and wind was evident and again the carnage left in its path, unbelievable. The cruise itself was great, however the rain and fog did reduce the enjoyment. It was a large day and one we will remember for years to come.
