What people are saying about Piazza Armerina
Our guide, Allesio, was fantastic. He spoke really good English, knew a tremendous amount about everything we saw, and was extremely pleasant to be with. His driving felt very safe and the other guests on this trip were also very enjoyable. Absolutely perfect.
Allessio is a very good driver and extremely well informed guide. Information about sites to be visited is provided en route to sites and at the Valley in Agrigento, visitors are dropped at one end and met at Gate V at the other end. The trip from Catania takes about two hours. The Greek temples are fabulous and it is an easy, if quite long walk, with a drink/food stop in the centre (pricey). We were fortunate that we were the only guests and negotiated to go to the museum rather than having a lunch stop. The museum has a well curated collection. The Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina are spectacular. We were unfortunate that a thunderstorm had taken out the villa’s lights and we had to view them in gloomy conditions but they gave a wonderful insight into 12th century daily life and are the most extensive, well preserved mosaics we have seen. We had only a week in Sicily and were delighted to find this tour, the only one that visits both sites in the one day. Great day, great guide!
Our tour guide, Alessio, picked us up at 9 am at our hotel, which was great because we had not rented a car in Catania, Sicily. Two other couples, who spoke only Spanish, were on the tour with us. Alessio was fluent in both English and Spanish and did a great job alternating conversations between us. My husband and I really liked Alessio! He is a great tour guide and we highly recommend this excursion! The drive through Sicily was an added bonus, on top of seeing the Temple of the Gods and Villa Romana. The country side is beautiful! Tip: wear sunscreen!
We were taken in a comfortable transit vehicle and the driver, though not intrusive, was full of useful and interesting information about the history, society and culture of Sicily in particular and Italy in general. The seemingly pointless security check at Agrigento took up some of the time available to see the site, but this was not the fault of the tour.
I booked this tour because I wanted to visit the incredible Villa Romana del Casale and found out this is the only available tour from Catania. The tour also includes Agrigento amazing Valley of Temples, which I also wanted to see, though perhaps it's a little too much for one day if you want deeper experiences. The places to visit are very rich and may deserve a little more time, especially if you have some problems of mobility and can't go to and fro too quickly. The Valley is big and you must try to cross it in 75 minutes. La Villa Romana is not that big and 75 minutes visit is more than enough. Anyway, quite a recommandable experience, especially due to the professionality, knowledge and experience of the warm and nice driver Alessio, who knows and loves Sicily and its history very much and who will surely be totally disposed to help all your needs to make this tour unforgettable! He also runs other tours you should also check out! Thanks Alessio for that magic Sunday!
