Full description
Created between 1919 and 1947 for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Castle was donated to the state of California in 1957. Since that time it has been maintained as a state historic park, where the estate and its considerable collection of art and antiques is open for public tours. Today, you can explore the castle and the grand social rooms with an expert guide.

This tour is best for first time visitors and has the fewest stairs to climb. You begin in the National Geographic Theatre, where you can watch a film about the building of the castle and its historic relics. Then, you set off to explore the Grand Rooms of the house.

Once you're in the house, your guide will share stories and anecdotes of Hearst's guests and friends, who graced these halls with their presence. On the ground floor of the Casa Grande, you can imagine what it must have been like to be invited here in the 1920s and 30s.

After the tour, you will be treated to a gourmet deli lunch before heading back to your lodging. If you have time, you can stop at a local winery or shop in downtown Cambria before returning. It's up to you.
