After your visit, you have free time for lunch, and it’s a short stroll along the riverside to the charming island Ile de la Cité. Along the way you might like to stop and browse at some of the famous and picturesque vintage booksellers, set up along the riverside since 1859 and now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then it’s time to meet your guide for a tour of some of the architectural gems of the city. Your first visit will be to the 850 year old Cathedral of Notre Dame. This gothic masterpiece is home to some of the largest rose windows in Europe, and also houses the relics of Christ’s crown of thorns. Your guide will lead you through the cathedral, pointing these out to you whilst revealing to you the stories of its construction, and those of the colorful characters that make up its history, including of course the famous Hunchback. Climb the famous cathedral towers, see Quasimodo’s bell, and enjoy a birds-eye view of Paris, in the company of the iconic gargoyles.
You’ll also visit the Conciergerie, once a medieval palace, later a notorious revolutionary prison, and final home to Queen Marie Antoinette before she was taken to the guillotine. Your visit here will allow you a better understanding of the turmoil during this period in French history, as you learn of the prisoners kept here and see the conditions in which they lived.
Your guide will then take you to the gem of gothic architecture, the spectacular Sainte Chapelle. Built in the 13th Century to house the holy relics brought to France by the King Saint Louis, this tiny church is home to some of the most dazzling stained glass in the world. Skip the often long lines and marvel at the glorious colors of the windows, as your guide helps you read the fascinating stories laid out on them
After this part of your tour is over, you might like to cross the river for a visit to Shakespeare and Company, the famous bookstore and literary hangout, or explore the Latin Quarter. Then it’s a short stroll over the second island on the river, the tiny and irresistable Ile St Louis, home to some of the most expensive real estate in Paris and also some of the best ice cream in the city. You might like to try some before boarding your boat for a cruise down the Seine river, from where you can admire the many beautiful sites and monuments laid out along the UNESCO World Heritage listed river banks. See the Orsay Museum, the Tuileries Gardens, the Grand Palais, and some of the most beautiful bridges in the city, before arriving at your final destination of the day, the Eiffel Tower.
Built in 1889, the ‘Iron Lady’ was hated by many Parisians when she first appeared on the skyline. Now the iconic symbol of the city, no trip to Paris is complete without a climb to the very top of the Eiffel Tower. Join your guide and skip the famously long lines with priority access to the second floor, from where you will enjoy a bird’s eye view across the city. Your guide will point out all the major sights: from Montmartre to the Arc de Triomphe; the golden dome of the Invalides to the iconic modern architecture of the Pompidou center, all of Paris is laid out at your feet. Then climb to the very top of the tower - it’s the perfect end to your day in Paris.
