What people are saying about Ninh Binh

Great guide, scenery - very disappointing food experience

Hoa (Bruce Lee), our guide was exceptionally good and discreet. He's very knowledgeable, prompt, on time and does the activities with you. E.g. he doesn't wait at the foot of the hill to wait for you to come down. He was also very accommodating to our requests. We were lucky enough to be the only couple on this tour. The disappointment was the uncomfortable transportation (lacking leg space, plastic cover), the so called "home cooked meals", tasteless, adapted to tourists palate without drinks, a payable add-on. I have been in and out of Vietnam for the past 8 years and dare say I can differentiate good from less good Vietnamese food. The last lunch meal was among the worst I ever had during my stays. The trip itself is definitely worth it, but not at the cost this tour is offered. the USD 30.00 bungalow is nice, Bruce Lee is exceptionally good, but the transportation and the meal organization (venues) and it's quality is far below what I would expect at this price level.

Terrific guide services, adequate food experience.

My wife & I were celebrating her birthday with a quick 1-day road trip. The scenery was gorgeous. Our guide Lan (who referred to himself by Unicorn) was charismatic & extremely helpful, & knowledgeable. Terrific 2-hour boat river-ride despite the scorching heat. Wonderful, quick biking tour the river with stunning views. Everything was perfect except for the food. I'm a foodie, so I value good food & I'm always looking for gasto-delightful experiences. The buffet was subpar, to say the least. Restaurant staff were picking up fruit, with their bare hands, and replacing it in the serving dishes if it happened to fall off onto the buffet tables. Flies were everywhere; the fried peanuts & several pasta dishes lacked flavor & tasted like vegetable oil. The restaurant has, by design, no windows to provide the patrons with an open-air feel. That's lovely during the cooler seasons, but not in the summer. No air conditioning and people were clustering around the ceiling.

Tourist Trap, but Good Guide and Travel Operator w/ Destination So So

Let me start by saying that the guide and travel operator were professional and I have no complaints about them. As for Hoa Lu and Tam Coc, it is on the very extreme side of over tourism commercialisation. Tam Coc is essentially a closed man-made body of water, not a running river, where all tourists are taken, not just this group but 1000s. It really drives at the root of the phrase "Tourist Trap". Hoa Lu is highly passable historic site without much to show. To other Visitors: I would just avoid going here to be honest unless you are unable to find your on adventure. This was a strong reminder why you don't go with tour groups. There are plenty of places to visit in the countryside of Vietnam and you can get there by renting a driver or renting a motorbike yourself. To the operator: I would like to see more tailored packages such as rock climbing, river rafting, etc, offered that aren't at fully commercialised places. Would definitely sign up.

More peaceful version of in-land Halong Bay

Our thoughtful and energetic guide, Tu (aka Ana), tried to teach the big group a few words in Vietnamese on the way to Bai Dinh. The visit to the huge pagoda was fine but nothing too spectacular. The quaint Trang An was more interesting to explore, including the pretty tasty buffet, the bike ride, and the two-hour boat ride. We passed through several head-height caves and marveled at the still beauty of the surrounding mountains, all shouting the handiwork of the Awesome God. This trip to the in-land Halong Bay turned out to be more enjoyable than the real Halong Bay.

Great experience on the boat and into the caves

Our tour guide Fuang from go asia travel was well organized. She was proactive and engage will the people in the group. She was very detail and gave us information on the tour and what to watch out so we can prepare. The visit to the temple was shot, we spent around 30 mins there but the place was not that big as well. For the boat ride, apart from all the pushy venders it was great. For the food there were a lot of options to choose from as we were not picky we had no problem.
