Full description
Learn about Napier’s worst earthquake, the worst in New Zealand in the past 100 years. The earthquake struck in February 1931 and destroyed and leveled most of the city’s buildings. As interesting as it is tragic, this is a memorable story. With a self-guided audio tour have more flexibility to experience it as you wish.

Discover why the city is famous for its Art Deco style and learn about the functions of some of the buildings before and after the disaster. Learn about the fire which took hold shortly after the earthquake and ran rampant throughout the city, devastating the buildings that were still standing. Hear all about the temporary accommodation set up in Clive Square to accommodate those displaced by this disastrous event.

Included in the tour are the stories of Napier Banks, the tram network, the Municipal Theatre, the Public Trust Building, the reporting of the quake, and the rebuilding and new land. Hear accounts from earthquake survivors Edward Waaka and Theresa Foley. See the Market Reserve Building, St John's Cathedral, the County Hotel, the Conservation Building with the Marine Parade Buildings, the iconic Masonic Hotel, and the HMS Veronica.
